Eagle visits fishing trawler to steal fish

FEB. 7, 2019 / 2:51 PM
By Ben Hooper

Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A particularly bold bald eagle paid a visit to a fishing trawler in British Columbia to step right up to a fisherman and steal a fish.

The video shows a bald eagle land on a fishing trawler off the coast of Prince Rupert and stroll right up to a fisherman cleaning some of the vessel's catches.

- video at link -

The eagle insistently, but not aggressively, pushes toward the fish while the man gently tries to nudge it away.

The bird's persistence pays off when it manages to grab the fish in its beak to start to eat it.

1. Such persistence deserves to be rewarded.

I would have found that completely thrilling. The fisherman was won over - he ended up gently stroking the eagle’s back.

2. Neat. But a shame. The birds should be hunting on their own, not salvaging it like this, but...

I compliment the intelligence of the birds for figuring out 'hey, this is an easier way to get something to eat' and I compliment the worker for being gentle w/ the beautiful birds. Neat all around.

They will take a fish from an osprey if they can. They will gladly eat rotting salmon who have spawned. They are opportunistic and majestic and around here we love them.

going on the back roads of Bennett Springs MO to Buffalo MO...there's a huge field there that is filled w/ the birds on the north side of highway 32 goings towards Buffalo. I am thinking that it's close to some sort of fishery down there (there's tons of fishing etc. down there). It is weird to see them out there. We also do see them here on the river (junction of the MO and Mississippi rivers), migration perhaps.

Take care!
