The Fukushima Daiichi Disaster Radiating Your DNA - Thom Hartmann Show (and DU Video forum)

https://www.democraticunderground.com/1017535166 (complete with "incisive" commentary)
The Fukushima Daiichi Disaster, although out of the news is still irradiating Japan, the Pacific Ocean and the world.

Kevin Kamps, a Nuclear Waste Expert explains the problem on the Thom Hartmann program,

Given the United States has multiple Fukushima style nuclear reactors, how many potential Fukushima disasters does America have in store?

Tritium! 12.3 years half-life. 10 half-lives is 123 years, 20 half-lives is 246 years .... In intimate contact with your DNA molecules ...

Around 4:10 - 4:30 : studies have shown Fukushima Prefecture monkeys with bone marrow dysfunction and decreased brain size.

Around 5:25 - 5:46: if fuel rod storage cooling pools lose cooling water (it's an active earthquake zone), they would catch fire and be a worse airborne radiation disaster than 3/11/11.

6:24 - 7:30 about how renewables makes nuclear unnecessary as a solution, and undesirable as a solution -- as a more nuclear solution would be trading off a climate catastophe with a radioactive catastrophe! (nothing about how renewables overcome the intermittency problem, their own enormous resource requirements and toxicity or any of that)

8:05: Price Anderson insurance subsidy for nuclear ...

8:50 - End: Trump admin trying for $17 billion/year for old nuclear plant bailout subsidies and another $17 billion/year in coal-fired power plant subsidies.

================================================

The Minnesota legislature is debating measures like ending the moratorium on building new nuclear power plants and crediting the existing nukes as also contributing to carbon-free goals (yes, I know no form of commercial-scale energy production is completely carbon free), but anyway all one hears from the media is, when reporting the "other side" -- "what about the nuclear waste problem"? "What about Chernobyl, Fukushima!" (Nothing about the equivalent of a Holocaust each year every year due to fossil- and bio-energy air pollution of course).

After a mere 10 half lives radioactivity has dropped below detectable limits.

Of course, if the half life is millions of years, that's a different story. But even then after 10 half lives you wouldn't detect the radioactivity any more.

Clearly the U.S.A. needs to expand its liquid natural gas export capacity so everyone can enjoy the benefits of renewable wind and solar energy.

Japan’s LNG imports fall as nuclear power revives
Fri 11 Jan 2019 by Selwyn Parker

Japan could soon be toppled from its place as the world’s biggest importer of natural gas as the country’s nuclear reactors are controversially started up again following the Fukushima disaster, according to a definitive study of the world’s energy outlook for 2019.

With significant impact on LNG shipping, the Institute of Energy Economics Japan expects Japan’s domestic natural gas supplies to fall, albeit slightly, for the third consecutive year in fiscal 2019 among other wider predictions. The institute estimated imports will total 82M tonnes compared with 82.3M in 2018. For further comparison, imports stood at 85.6M tonnes in 2017.

Meantime China is steadily gaining ground on Japan as the number one buyer, having imported around 54M tonnes in 2018 in pursuit of its clean-energy policy.

This article was published in January. China has since become the largest importer of natural gas.

Anti-nuclear activists and "renewable energy" enthusiasts inevitably become shills for the natural gas industry.

There's plenty of cheap natural gas in the ground. If we continue to use it as a power source, even as "backup" power for wind and solar energy schemes, we will destroy earth's natural environment as we know it.

We *ARE* destroying the earth's natural environment as we know it.
