Jim Fowler, from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, dies at age 87

Longtime host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom dies at age 87

OMAHA, Neb. — Jim Fowler, the longtime host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, and who helped preserve and protect endangered species through his educational and outreach work has died at the age of 87.

Fowler, a professional zoologist, hosted Wild Kingdom starting in 1986. Prior to that he served as a co-host of the program with Marlin Perkins, starting in 1963. Fowler made hundreds of appearances on television, including KETV NewsWatch 7, and he would visit schools whenever he visited Omaha.

Jim Fowler, longtime host of ‘Wild Kingdom’ nature series, dies at 87

By Harrison Smith May 9 at 11:54 AM

Jim Fowler, the khaki-clad naturalist who helped bring the wonders of the natural world to millions of viewers as a host of “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” — wrangling snakes and tigers in the bush and leaping from a helicopter to tag a moose in the wilderness — died May 8 at 87.

His family announced the death in a statement but did not immediately provide further information.

Mr. Fowler was the longtime sidekick to Marlin Perkins, the zoologist who hosted “Wild Kingdom” from its premiere in 1963 until his retirement in 1985, after which Mr. Fowler took over. Mr. Fowler also hosted “Mutual of Omaha’s Spirit of Adventure,” served as the wildlife correspondent for NBC’s “Today” show and was a frequent guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” He and his programs received four Emmy Awards.

A complete obituary will follow.

"Let's watch as Jim checks to see if the Cape Buffalo is sufficiently tranquillized!"

Seriously, though, mad respect for the late Mr. Fowler.

what dangerous thing Marlin *the star* would find for him to do.

"Hey Jim, go see what it is making that huge lump in the Anaconda." Just once I wanted him to talk back, just a bit, just for fun.

RIP Mr. Fowler and thanks for all the entertaining education you gave to so many of us over so many years. You made a huge difference in our lives and our thinking.

As a kid growing up in central B.C., MOH's WK was a weekly journey into the greater world and a bulwark against the Disneyfication of nature reporting.
