bee populations by 30 percent!

New research published in the journal Biological Conservation reveals just how much bees hate freshly cut grass: Researchers found that mowing a lawn once every two weeks instead of every week raises the number of bees by 30 percent.
On a basic level, this makes sense. Cutting your grass less often leads to more flowers and weeds, which appeal more to the bees. But for some reason, letting the grass grow for even longer sees lower bee levels again. The researchers speculate that this is primarily due to the longer grass hiding or blocking the flowers for the bees.

(16,335 posts)Such a simple solution to help with such a life threatening problem. I wonder who could find fault in this. Well, actually we all know who could but, you know, I'm thinking about what normal, mentally healthy person would.

(38,958 posts)I mow 2-3 times per week and will continue to do so. It is hard to keep up with the rainy weather we have. If I waited two weeks I would never be able to get through the yard, I would be cited by the city, have more gnats & mosquitos than we already do (and they are forming squadrons for wave attacks),see increased rodents & snakes and never be able to enjoy any of my limited outdoor area.

(6,831 posts)I lived for years near the Everglades and I swear, our mosquitoes were so big, we could hear them calling for clearance to land.

(38,958 posts)two weeks ago it was 7 inches, this week 4 inches and a soggy weekend ahead. I was trying to talk with a neighbor this week over the fence and we had to go in because of the gnats and that was about 1pm. The bugs are obnoxious, I haven't heard them call the Tower yet for approach clearances, but it is starting to look like old WWII films when the dive bombers started to peel off to do their runs on the targets.

(6,831 posts)Mosquitoes LOVE me. I walk out the door, and I hear them yell, "Fresh meat !!" to one another. I have tried "Off" and citronella candles, and bug bracelets, but them seem impervious to those.
Hope your weather breaks soon. So much flooding in so many places. Pretty soon, you folks will need canoes to go get groceries.

(38,958 posts)I know what you mean about the "Fresh Meat" call (or rather my wife does) as she suffers badly with bites. I will have to put down insecticide granules and spray as well this year. Thankfully our local municipal government does a good job with the Mosquito Truck going around each summer.
The local bird food store has a sale on something more natural called Z-Fence and I will give it a try as well.

(38,958 posts)and she wore it yesterday during the day. Seemed to be working okay for her. I got 2 more for a friend and her little girl but haven't been able to get them delivered yet.
I would say the jury is still out.

(15,088 posts)But I have only a tiny lawn and massive flower beds. In bloom now: pansies, irises, Siberian irises, mock orange, peonies, false indigo, lobelia, alyssum, Veronica, dianthus, bachelors buttons, and probably some other stuff I dont remember. The bees are happy.
