Backpackers' killing of grizzly bear under investigation

Montana wildlife officials are investigating the fatal shooting of an adult female grizzly bear by two backpackers who said they were acting in self-defense.

The surprise encounter occurred Aug. 2 on a bush-lined trail in the Cabinet Mountains in northwest Montana.

According to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks news release, the backpackers reported the incident after they hiked out of the backcountry on Aug. 4.

The Daily Inter Lake reported Thursday that the backpackers were not carrying bear spray and both shot at the animal, according FWP.

Usually bear spray is the preferred defense for a lot of reasons. The article doesn't say what kind of firearm was used. Unless you're a good shot and can maintain your cool a charging bear can be on you before you can kill it.

Also the fact that it was a female makes one wonder whether she had cubs.

for not having bear spray on them and killing a grizzly bear. The state of Montana has a huge public outreach and ed program emphasizing the importance of having it with you and knowing how to use it. Honestly, if you're planning on hiking in Montana, you should stay home if you can't be smart enough to bring your bear spray with you.
