Then, just an observation. Here in rural northeast KS in a small town of fewer than 200 population, I have been watching closely the last few days. Outside of a few turkey buzzards I have seen no birds. No sparrows, no robins, no finches, cardinals, red tail hawks, nothing. I hear no calls beyond the solitary owl I heard last night. But at daybreak, silence. Damned spooky, I'm tellin' ya.

(29,199 posts)in rural NE Kansas... the lack of birds this time of year is disturbing...
This is the migration season... I remember huge flocks of all kinds of birds headed south.

(1,132 posts)During my drive to and from work have seen no birds flying, none on wires. Water fowl migration has decreased over the years. Geese often winter here now; as long as there is open water; but haven't seen any water fowl either.

(22,629 posts)Although, they were annoying, I really miss them. My bluebird didnt nest and I only had one mocking bird in the backyard this year. The red hawk was killed on the road in the front of the property and I found the owl that used to hang out on the back deck at night, dead beside the mailbox. The silence is deafening here.
