Facebook suspends environmental groups despite vow to fight misinformation

Facebook blames mistake in system for restrictions on groups including Greenpeace USA

Facebook has suspended the accounts of several environmental organizations less than a week after launching an initiative it said would counter a tide of misinformation over climate science on the platform.

Groups such as Greenpeace USA, Climate Hawks Vote and Rainforest Action Network were among those blocked from posting or sending messages on Facebook over the weekend. Activists say hundreds of other individual accounts linked to indigenous, climate and social justice groups were also suspended for an alleged “intellectual property rights violation”.

The suspended people and groups were all involved in a Facebook event from May last year that targeted KKR & Co, a US investment firm that is backing the Coastal GasLink pipeline, a 670km-long gas development being built in northern British Columbia, Canada.

The suspensions, the day before another online action aimed at KKR & Co, has enraged activists who oppose the pipeline for its climate impact and for cutting through the land of the Wetʼsuwetʼen, a First Nations people.

“Videos of extreme violence, alt-right views and calls for violence by militias in Kenosha, Wisconsin, are allowed to persist on Facebook,” said Delee Nikal, a Wet’suwet’en community member. “Yet we are banned and receive threats for permanent removal, for posting an online petition.”

At what point does “keeping up with distant friends and family” no longer outweigh:
1) unapologetic Russian misinformation;
2) platforms for alt white Nuremberg rallies;
3) anti- science hysteria from your great aunt who read some shit on a QAnon site;
4) selling your data to malevolent actors;
5) a hundred other reasons, ad nauseum, ad infinitum??

I hear that all the time. I also know that, in most of the cases I have been around, the majority of their posts are not to keep up with family and friends. This is the 21st century. You can contact people in many ways. To desire a platform for everyone to gather and see how great your life is while using that same platform to spread crap proves to me that it was never about keeping up with friends and family. It is about creating an audience. Take it from an old performer.

Facebook is 21st century version of the dreaded news bulletin about the family's exploits over the previous year masquerading as a Christmas card.

so I’ll phrase this in the form of a question. Are you saying Facebook is more a vanity project, than anything else?

I am saying it was a decent idea, but was quickly turned into a piranha pool by attention seekers who learned that they were getting a level of respect and attention on the site than they were denied in real life. (Most likely because anyone who was actually around the person would easily see just how horrid they were). Once the sycophants got into the mix.... well... you get the idea. I see it like the famous meme does: "I used to want to have the power to read others minds. Then I got a Facebook account and now I am over it." There was such a thing as an 'internal dialogue'. I feel we need to re-develop that ability.

I was going bald starting at 19. I finally just started shaving it all around age 30. ( I was finally carded when I did this. Never got carded before). I always find it hysterical that some men want to act like those five hairs on their heads have magical properties and can hide the fact that they are losing it all. They look like vain idiots. Just shave it and get a nice hat already!
