Republican governor wins in Montana, raising fears for beloved wilderness

Admirers of national parks and world-class trout streams in the state of Montana have expressed alarm over the election of a new Republican governor and his environmental plans.

The governor, former software developer Greg Gianforte, has in the past sought to strip protections from 700,000 acres of wilderness, and his conservative “Montana Comeback Plan” election platform promises to “streamline” permitting processes to increase logging, coalmining, and oil and gas production.

In May 2017, while running for a Montana congressional seat that he won, Gianforte was charged with assault after “bodyslamming” Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs to the floor. Gianforte pleaded guilty to assault and apologized for the incident, and also pledged to donate $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Donald Trump later praised Gianforte at a rally in Montana, saying “Any guy that can do a body slam – that’s my guy.”

Not a native Montanan...important in that state. For one. He keeps buying elections and was bound to eventually win.

This is a grave loss. Only Dem left there is the amazing wonderful Jon Tester.

They need help there. The Dems ran a guy who was so clearly a poor choice. I've encouraged my brilliant, engaged, progressive Dem daughter who lives there to get involved with their state Dem organization. My spidey sense tells me 1) Gianforte will be governing corruptly; and 2) he will be ripe for the picking in 4 (loooooong) years

I am planning to relocate in the next year. I have been on this battle for decades and I am spent. I need to find a less hostile place to retire and hope my days end soon enough that I wont have to witness the destruction of all I worked to protect.

This fucker and his long-time business partner, our other senator, have plans to destroy this fragile ecosystem which will have massive negative impacts of not just the entire US but the whole planet.

Fuck them and I hope they die trying to fuck everyone else.

Actually, Dems from any state. We need you to move here and help turn Montana blue. I believe it's possible.
