Biden to sign executive order targeting half of all vehicles sold in U.S. to be zero-emissions by

2030

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden will sign an executive order Thursday that sets a target for zero-emissions vehicles to account for half of all automobiles sold in the U.S. by 2030, according to senior administration officials, an ambitious goal that hinges on major investments by the federal government on charging stations and other infrastructure.

The non-binding target is part of a series of actions Biden will announce aimed at jump-starting a dramatic shift toward electric vehicles as part of the administration's broader agenda to tackle climate change and compete with China. The president will sign the order with executives from Ford, GM and Stellantis on hand as well as leaders from the United Auto Workers union as a display of their support for the efforts.

Biden will kick off development of long-term fuel efficiency and emissions standards that would apply to heavy-duty vehicles in addition to cars, SUVs and pickup trucks, officials said. The Environmental Protection Agency will also announce they're unwinding former President Donald Trump's rollback of near-term fuel efficiency and emissions standards.

The administration officials agreed to discuss the measures with reporters on the condition of anonymity.

Biden touts electric vehicle goals as boon for climate, economy and jobs

President Joe Biden on Thursday announced a set of actions intended to cut greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from cars and trucks, moves that would reduce planet-warming emissions from the No. 1 sector contributing to climate change in the U.S.

Biden signed an executive order setting a goal that half of all new vehicles sold by 2030 are zero emissions vehicles, specifically electric vehicles powered by batteries or fuel cells or hybrid-electric vehicles.

Biden pitched the goal to dramatically increase electric vehicle sales as a way for the U.S. to claim a bigger share of that market and the manufacturing jobs from increasing demand for electric vehicles and components like batteries, as well as a big step toward his climate goals to dramatically reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions. He said electric vehicles are like a "vision of the future now beginning to happen" and there's no turning back.

"The question is whether we'll lead or fall behind in the race for the future. It’s whether we'll build these vehicles and the batteries that got them to where they are in the United States -- here in the United States, or we’re going to have to rely on other countries for those batteries," Biden said in remarks on the White House South Lawn with electric vehicles staged behind him in a White House driveway.

Was a bit confused there for a minute, lol.

This is great news, I hope they can come up with a biodegradable battery or recyclable batter as that seems to be a problem. I know this is being worked on.

reasonably priced. There's no way that I'll ever be able to afford a used let alone new electric
vehicle unless it's an e-bike.

And what's this about "zero emissions"? Is the manufacture of batteries for all these electric
vehicles "zero emission"? Is generation of the electricity they run on "zero emission"? Let's think
this through.
