To some of us, he is also T.J. Hooker but lets be honest, he will always and forever be known as the iconic character, Captain James Tiberius Kirk of the USS Starship Enterprise. Recently he traveled into space, becoming at age 90 the oldest person to do so. But William Shatner, the charming and handsome Canadian, did not return from space seeking to talk only about himself.
Captain Kirk loves planet earth and wants to save it.
I wish I had better news and more entertainment and jokes to tell you but I was moved to tears by what I saw, Shatner said. I come back filled and overwhelmed with sadness and empathy for this beautiful thing we call Earth."
In comments that strongly suggested what he saw gave him pause, Shatner was adamant that we had no more time to waste if we are to save this planet, and by extension, our species.
We're at the tipping point, we haven't got time to wait 30 years and argue about a few billion dollars, Shatner said. Burying your head in the sand another instant about global warming and the destruction of the planet is suicide for all of us.

(7,399 posts)Now your parents and teachers may have told you that NO problems can be solved by fighting. This is an overstatement, albeit a well-meaning one. You see, Captain Kirk was able to clean up the Alpha Quadrant with little more than a starship and his fists. But Kirk knows that he can't punch greenhouse gasses in the face. He could certainly double-fist punch climate deniers in the back, but this is pointless as well (despite the immense satisfaction it produces). We need diplomacy. We need Captain Picard.

(2,886 posts)We've all heard mixed reports about his temperament, but he's probably mellowed, and I have some generalized fondness and appreciation for the guy, for the fictional space character hey portrayed, and certainly for the series. Plenty of warm fuzzies that he had this experience. But.
Another way to have added his voice against climate change would be to have condemned joy rides into space instead accepting the invite to take one. They add lots of carbon to the atmosphere just so four people can have 3 minutes of freefall and a pretty view. Ok--a spectacular, even personally transformative view. Two of these joy rides now, in their continuing mission to destroy the planet. I already don't eat red meat, but I could give up all animal products, as well as coffee and who knows what else, and it's not going to match the amount of carbon they just farted.

(33,475 posts)...as important and are less interested in what engineers and scientists say.
It's especially not surprising over at Daily Kos where science is as badly discussed as say, in newspapers.
It's not a "few billion dollars." It's trillions of dollars, tens of trillions of dollars that absolutely have to be spent wisely and efficiently. There are very few plans to do either, but no matter.
It's not a subject for a 90 year old man who takes joy rides in space to discuss.
