Until we have a method of breaking down plastic into usable materials, the problem will only be shifted, not solved.

Some folks send it to recycle, because that's the best we can do now. That said, recycle is not the answer. In my opinion, recycling is a little more than a greenwash by the plastics industry and government to give the appearance of action.

Some pick it up to bring greater awareness to the problem. Some document everything.

Some use it for art...also to enhance awareness. And some folks just want to get as much plastic as possible away from the critters.

I'm as overwhelmed as anyone by how massive the big-scale problem is but I will always believe in doing my little part.
Like what about the turtles whose shells grow wrong because they get wrapped in plastic when they're young? If I'd been in the right place to pick up that 6-pack holder then that one turtle would be okay. And that turtle could be a complete dick but probably not
