SO much for using the one tool afforded wildlife advocates in trying to protect persecuted species from human mismanagement... It just seems that either there are a whole bunch of us who want to kill wolves and especially those we can lure out of YNP or nobody seems to know anything about this and/or nobody cares. Problem is, it's not just about the wolves, it's about all our wildlife and the value we the people place on them... dead or alive, our public lands and resources our environment and where we will draw the line.
YNP wolf hunting closure denied by NEW local judge:
Local Montana Judge: wolf hunting and trapping will remain open next to Yellowstone Park
Year after year the state of Montana has pummeled Yellowstone Parks wildlife right at its northern boundary. They have slaughtered thousands of bison that stepped outside the Park and now decimated Yellowstones already naturally declining wolf population.
Today a Montana state district judge strengthened the earlier ruling (injunction) by a now retired judge that struck down Montana Fish Wildlife and Park Commissions (FWP) emergency wolf hunting closure around Gardiner, Montana. The town sits right on the north boundary of Americas (and the worlds) first national park. The wolf hunting closure area is in a natural wildlife migration corridor because the topography a couple miles to the east or west is too rugged and steep. New District Judge Brenda Gilbert issued her ruling and injunction today (Friday) after a Jan. 14 hearing in Livingston, MT.
The emergency closure came after 7 Park wolves were killed as they were wandering just outside the Park, disrupting and basically ending the Parks wolf winter research program because five of the wolves had radio collars. Three of them were advanced GPS collars that record all the movements of the wolves.
Judge Gilberts basic argument was that FWP did not give enough notice to wolf hunting and trapping hunting proponents to comment on the emergency closure. She said if the emergency closures had stood, Montanans would have been improperly denied the ability to hunt and trap wolves and it would have increased the risks of livestock attacks by the animals.

(17,528 posts)We invest so much in re-introducing wolves and now we kill them. I'll bet some people (Not scientists) wanted them re-introduced...just so they'd have some great hunting in the future. Poor wolves!

(86,537 posts)It makes me ill too. The issue is really complex and not at the same time. It's truly a cultural thing, kind of a parallel to the gun culture. There is a minority of those who just want to kill them all and made it hard to reintroduce and keep them safe, the politicians who do their bidding, and the whackos with guns and traps who just have a blood lust to satisfy and wolves are hated by them and their ilk which gives them their own personal justification. And then there are those who appreciate the importance of wolves in the ecosystem, that they are sentient beings an have respect for nonhuman life forms in general, and the there are those who just love wolves like many of us love kitties. Even though the ESA mandates that something be done to restore threatened and endangered species, like the gun nuts, it's all about gov't control, taking away guns, black helicopters and not realizing that the only reason there are elk to hunt is because the F&G agencies mange for an over population so they can kill something- a self fulfilling prophecy sort of thing that works for the corporate people and their politicians that they own.
I honestly believe that the hunting crowd have been manufactured to believe they have a heritage at stake so that the MIC and gun mfg cabal can have advocates. The wildlife is only acceptable if they can kill it, and if not, they can't handle it and so the F&G agencies are told to allow for hunting of the predators with the veiled excuse of gaining acceptance for them, because they are letting the wolf haters kill them. There's so much BS surrounding the whole issue that you could build a land bridge like structure across the Pacific with it.
On Edit: The truth is that the reintroduction was favored by over 70% of Americans both nationwide and in the states where the reintroductions took place. Sound familiar?
