$1M pilot project aims to take out feral pigs

http://news.yahoo.com/1m-pilot-project-aims-feral-pigs-080006182--finance.html

Feral pigs have already taken over Texas and are expanding their numbers in other states, but federal and state land managers think they have a chance to tip the balance in New Mexico. They're willing to bet $1 million in federal funds on a yearlong pilot project aimed at eradicating the pigs and using what they learn here to keep them from gaining a foothold elsewhere.

It marks the first time the U.S. Department of Agriculture has teamed up with a state to develop a comprehensive plan for getting rid of the pigs.

A small army of state and federal employees has been trained to stalk, trap and kill New Mexico's feral pigs. Various techniques have been used by wildlife managers and landowners for decades in the fight against feral swine, but the New Mexico team is focusing on determining what combination works best in which circumstances and how effectively helicopters can be to track the pigs across vast landscapes.

"We're trying to get ahead of the curve with this so we can prevent a lot of the damage that we know will be coming if we don't do anything about it," said USDA Wildlife Services state director Alan May. "Sport hunting pressure alone won't be enough to stop a population from spreading."

1. Texas: Ted Nugent Says He Killed 455 Pigs With Machine Gun For Bill Maher And 'Animal Rights Freaks'
Mon Mar 18, 2013, 04:34 PM
Mar 2013
“I took my machine gun in the helicopter -- in the Texas hill country -- me and my buddy ‘Pigman.' His name is ‘Pigman’; I’m the swine czar. I killed 455 hogs with my machine gun. I did it for Bill Maher and all those other animal rights freaks out there," he told Winterble, according to RumorFix. "My haters will hate me more for that."

Nugent, who claims he fired off 750 rounds a minute, says it was all for the common good since wild pigs destroy the region's natural habitat, RumorFix reports. After the kill, the 64-year-old gun-crazed rocker said he gave the meat to the needy. “We distributed tons of the most delicious pork to the soup kitchens and homeless shelters of this state. Everything we did was perfect – win, win, win," he added. “I had to adjust my halo as I was machine-gunning hogs.”

Even in a helicopter, it is not possible to spot that many hogs in one day, much less shoot them. They are not bison (who will stand around until the last one drops), but highly intelligent animals that will scatter at the first shot. When they break into a full run, they can outrun quarter horses for the short haul. They can also turn on a dime at speed.

Ted Nugent is not only a liar, but a bad liar at that.

take a good look at Nugent. He's the basic model, unimproved; still a murderous asshole despite 10,000 years of civilization. It's a damned thin veneer.

3. Listen. I am one of the strongest gun regulation persons you can find. I own no weapons myself.

However, one varmint I can see going after with the strongest ammunition possible is those feral hogs. They are terrible. They eat anything: crops, livestock, tear up fences, ruin waterholes, destroy the natural environment and it's creatures. They also are not afraid of people, and do their destruction at night. They breed and bear huge litters constantly. They are NOT native animals to the areas to which they are spreading. I'm glad the feds and states are teaming up to try to limit, if not eradicate these truly destructive creatures. They have no natural predators.
