Zoltek assessed penalty by state environmental regulators

State environmental regulators have assessed a $32,660 penalty against Zoltek Corp., an Abilene manufacturer of carbon fiber on Fulwiler Road in Five Points Business Park

The company is seeking a permit amendment that would increase allowable furnace emissions to 2,200 pounds annually. The Environmental Protection Agency listed 11 Texas plants as disposing of or otherwise releasing more than 2,000 pounds of hydrogen cyanide in 2010.

"It's like a plasticky, rubber stench, and when it's really, really bad, it burns the inside of your nose," said Fraser, adding that the worst conditions are at night.

"If it's really, really bad ... when you shine your headlights, the light in your headlights will be pink. Now you tell me how dangerous that is for people and animals to be breathing?" Fraser said.
