These photos of Alberta methane bubbles are beautiful but also quite, quite disturbing

London's Daily Mail newspaper ran a feature with multiple shots showing bubbles of the highly greenhouse-causing gas methane trapped in the ices of Albertan lakes. But the methane won't be trapped for long, thanks to massive melting and warming. And then consider all the methane currently trapped under Arctic ice further north, that ice melting rapidly, as well. It's nature's big fart in our face; the closest thing on our planet to Saturn's moon Titan and its frozen methane lakes.

These images are a huge wake-up call because they show just how close we are to further catastrophe. Be afraid, but also be active. Share 'em around. Go to:

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Iinstead of wasting resources digging into the earth for dirty, toxic tar sands and crude oil, and fracking for natural gas, ruining what environment we still have in the process, why aren't fossil fuel companies mining this methane before it vaporizes into the atmosphere?

Yes, I know it's all over the place and they can't get it all, but you'd think they'd at least try to get as much as they can. It's near the surface and begging to be safely directed to good use. Instead, we all sit around, helplessly watching our atmosphere transform into something very dangerous and unhealthy for our planet's life.

Only thing I can think of is.... it's an explosive gas.

Methane gas and coal dust are the two leading causes of mine explosions/disasters.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]And there's research going on about using/storing that. I'm not saying it would be easy, but finding ways to collect/use the methane is certainly worthy of more investigation and effort.
