Gasholes sue to stop a man from putting a water well on his own property

So much for property rights

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — EQT Corp. is suing six West Virginia property owners who subverted the company's plans to put five gas wells on a 1,000-acre farm by sinking water wells on the site first.

Under state law, gas companies can't drill within 250 feet of an existing water well or spring used for human consumption.

Landowner Charles Heaster says he plans to build a cabin on the site. He says he doesn't want EQT to destroy another 50 acres of his farm near West Union.

Pennsylvania-based EQT wants a federal judge to issue an injunction ordering Heaster to plug and abandon the water well, and drop his construction plans for the cabin.

It's funny how RWers are all for private property rights until something like this comes up.

We've had our surface torn up and cattle killed.

Thirty+ years ago my dad set up a radio where he could hear the oil companies radio transmissions

The oil companies would wait until it looked like it was going to rain and then pump sludge into our creek. They would also put sludge in trucks and drive around with the pet cock open dumping it on the roads until it was empty so they wouldn't have to pay to properly dispose of it. $$$$$ reign!

We'd run out jump in the airplane fly over and get pictures, but in Oklahoma and Texas no one will do shit to the oil companies. They are the national diety.

They save a bundle by poisoning the masses. As long as we continue to put profits for the few ahead of the well being of the many this will continue.

Finally, the local ranchers brought it to a vote and stopped the practice.

I volunteered for shit burning. I got a truck to go to the fuel depot and shit burning only took about 15 minutes. Then I'd disappear with the truck on some mythical mission. Essentially I had the rest of the day off. After grinding it out in the field, shit burning was light work.

--Heaster has embraced the opportunities created by the booming gas industry in north-central West Virginia.

About 40 percent of his farm has been disturbed already, he said, and he has productive relationships with six gas companies that have drilled or plan to drill a total of 35 wells.

But Heaster said he doesn't like how EQT treats him, routinely coming onto his land without warning or explanation. Other companies are more courteous and cooperative, he said.

"Those gas line people, they tell you what they're going to do. They sit down with you, and they offer you a fair price," he said. With EQT, "from the time they set foot on the property to the time they leave, it's a fight."--
