The Law of Thermodynamics anyone?

Strap This Wind Turbine To Your Electric Car and You Can Drive Forever

Electricity-generating windmills churn out free energy as long as the wind is blowing. So strapping one to the roof of your car where there's always a breeze as long as you're driving just seems obvious. The Transport Turbine—seen here as a 3D printed proof of concept—puts four small wind turbines on the roof of your car that generate electricity as long as you're driving at least 25 mph, with minimal drag so as not to affect your gas mileage.

They will probably cause the car to loose more kinetic energy than they deliver.

They will deliver about as much energy as a dynamo on a bike.

I don't know if the battery can handle being recharged AND delivering at the same time. (This is what ruins car-batteries over the years.)

It doesn't work for a very simple reason: The weights rising up are farther away from the center and therefor exert more angular momentum than the weights going down. There isn't enough counter-force to lift them as they have a longer lever.

"No matter how fancy the design, the energy used just to move a turbine through space is greater than the energy it would create, unless of course you are driving through unicorn farts, then, free sparkly energy for everyone."

The reaction is predictable; Gizmodo readers won't fall for perpetual motion. It is a test to see if other websites pick it up and run with it?

Ichingcarpenter,

You are correct; this is just the latest in the series of perpetual motion scams.

People don't realize that when you put turbines on the roof of your car; if you get energy from them, then they have to increase drag.

So the net effect is that the energy that you get from the turbines; actually comes from the engine of the car.

Because of inefficiencies; it will not be a net energy producer.

There is no such thing as a "free lunch" in Physics.

The big oil companies are going to buy up the patents and the design, then bury them along with the 100 mpg carburetor.
