Why do lithium batteries fail prematurely? What can be done to improve reliability?

Doesn't start with a bang and the speaker isn't particularly inspiring but gets down to nitty gritty on the how and why of lithium cells for you geeky types.

You know who you are.

i built myself an ebike and sell lithium batteries. The main issue i have had is bad BMS (Battery management system). Replace bms battery is fine.

I also have built my own ebike and battery..

My bike with old battery

My current battery.

BMS is a major headache for small EVs, I don't use one but I charge with a balancing charger and I use a CellLog8S to keep track of cell voltages while I ride. My range is enough that I don't come close to using my entire available charge on my normal ride.

I'm actually discouraged by the fact that 3 billion plus years of life (at least) did not spit out an animal with batteries and electric muscles.

It seems my future high-tech utopian motorcycle is powered by sugar water fueled "muscles."
