Flooding in Norfolk getting worse, ODU study shows

"What we're seeing is steady progression of more hours of flooding every year," said professor Larry Atkinson, co-author of the study recently published in the online journal Earth's Future. "The bottom line is sea level is slowly rising, and on top of that, the normal climate cycles are being changed by global warming."
Using tide gauge data from Key West, Fla., to Portland, Maine, Atkinson and professor Tal Ezer calculated the increase in hours of flooding for 11 coastal cities, including New York, Boston and Atlantic City, N.J.
Norfolk, where hours of flooding have been steadily rising, saw one of the highest jumps.

Sea level has risen about 15 inches since the gauge was installed in 1927. Scientists have attributed about half of that rise to sinking land, known as subsidence.
The study also showed the hours of major flooding - more than 3 feet above high tide - have increased in many East Coast cities, including Norfolk.
