A chemical used in dry cleaning and fire extinguishers may have been phased out in recent years but NASA said Wednesday that carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is still being spewed into the atmosphere from an unknown source.
The world agreed to stop using CC14 as part of the Vienna Convention on Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol, which attained universal ratification in 2009.
Parties to the Montreal Protocol reported zero new CCl4 emissions between 2007-2012, the US space agency said in a statement.
However, the new research shows worldwide emissions of CCl4 average 39 kilotons per year, approximately 30 percent of peak emissions prior to the international treaty going into effect.

(811 posts)Has A distinctive odor. Used By Machinist, and mechanics for years as a cleaning fluid. I can never forget that smell. When I do smell it, and I have, The owners of such cleaning fluid always deny it stating, "you can't buy Carbon tet here." I would look at 3rd world countries for the source of use. I would look at first world countries for it's manufacture.

(17,301 posts)Someone is making big bucks off of spewing these illegal chemicals and it ain't some little guy who doesn't see the harm. In these quantities, it's got to be a huge corporation. They probably have a history of it too.
Now what corporations are known to use banned chemicals to make huge profits at the expenses of everyone else on earth?

The list of proven criminals is far too long but those two are at the top of it.

(6,278 posts)I wouldn't expect it to be large compared to previous annual production figures. But if it were a substantial fraction of a year's typical pre-ban use, maybe some of this is just people using old stock.
Or more likely, it's still being made and used someplace where regulation is lax...

(17,301 posts)more than 85 million pounds a year, not a one time dump, but each year, does NOT suggest some small rouge nation or handful of uncaring businesses or people.
And you can bet they are making big bucks off it AND use of it is going to increase.

(56 posts)The wild west of deregulation. Small machine shops making socket wrench sets or diesel generators or whatever. Other developing manufacturing countries like Romania or Uruguay. Hard to police the world, but the atmosphere is one thing.
