With nearly a quarter of Americas oil delivered by oceangoing tankers and hundreds of offshore rigs pumping crude from below the seafloor, oil and water do mix, with unfortunate regularity.
When they do, the environmental impacts can be devastating, and the cleanup a decades-long endeavor.
So its hard to believe that a tiny piece of stainless-steel mesh sitting in a lab could be the answer to reducing the messes left behind by oil spills.
But thats just what its inventors, scientists at Ohio State University, claim to be true. They say the material traps oil but lets water pass through, thanks to a nontoxic, oil-repelling coating on its surface.

(17,997 posts)1. It would be so wonderful
If this works. It would be better if we stopped ruining the environment.

(21,088 posts)2. The big answer to oil spills is not to have them in the first place.
But, well, non-negotiable way of life etc. It's better if we just develop more technology to deal with the aftermath of all these catastrophes.

(13,508 posts)3. Don't upset the profit model
Make profit #1 from transporting oil all over the world.
Make profit #2 from cutting corners that inevitably lead to an oil spill.
Make profit #3 from cleanup of oil spill.
There is a profitable corporate technofix to every profitable corporate
technoproblem that arises.
That's Progress(tm)!
Closely associated with "Hope & Change" (tm), "Looking Forward" (tm),
"Clean Coal" (tm) and other meaningless - but profitable - lies that the
herd just swallow to support Business As Usual.
