A dramatic new series about the world's fight to beat climate change
Species at risk. Oceans in peril. Millions of refugees in crisis.
At a time when the earth faces overwhelming challenges, some of our oldest media outlets are fading away. Scientists tell us time is running out. What were doing to the Earth has no parallel in 66 million years, scientists say in a study released by James Hansen and others the day this project goes live on Kickstarter. The same day, the world woke up to news of the terror attacks on Belgium.
How can people take action on climate change with so many pressing distractions?
Last year was the hottest in recorded history, and this year promises to be the hottest in politics. It's the year of the craziest election in American history with some contenders vowing to hurl climate agreements into the dust.
It's also the year that rubber needs to hit the road on climate change action carbon tax, emissions targets, and clean energy.
While the UN Climate Talks in Paris ended on a high note with international agreements and ambitious promises, a fragile global economy threatens the resolve of the world's political leaders.
So much depends on their immediate action, from the fish caught in acidifying oceans to the people in developing countries hit hardest by climate change caused by Western over-consumption.
That's why this project is so important, and with your backing, these stories will be told.
With your backing, we'll create a dramatic new series on the race against climate change
- We'll bring you reporting on where candidates in the U.S. presidential election stand on climate change, pipeline projects, LNG, and big oil
- We'll keep you posted on what Canadas new Liberal government is doing to keep its climate promises
- We can report on places where climate stories are breaking; on struggles and solutions around the world from the melting ice fields of Greenland, to the subways of New York City, to the flooded streets of Miami
- We'll deliver 600 stories, 30 videos, 1000+ photos of the breaking environmental news that matters most to readers like you
What we'll do with your funds
We depend on reader funding to pay for costly one to three-month investigations, well-written, in-depth stories, videos, and podcasts.
Your support means we can deliver powerful information interwoven in compelling narratives that provide information at the most crucial time: now.
World news moves fast and so much of it happens first on Twitter or Facebook. Your dollars also mean we can afford to broadcast our stories to wider audiences, using social media advertising to target those who can use and appreciate the information most.
Join us in launching National Observer's 'Race Against Climate Change' Special Report so we can start producing this urgent reporting.
Bonus coverage
The full force of climate change will be felt by millennials and the iGeneration. Do they feel their future has been sacrificed to the greed of a consumer culture? Will they lead a fundamental shift in values that puts the world back into balance or fall into despair, and escape into the virtual world? National Observer will search for answers to these questions and more.
Our reporting team will also update readers on the state of animals, beings who truly have no say in how the climate battle unfolds. How are they faring as the environment shifts, oceans acidify, and industrial farming and fishing grows?
