Happy 150th to the Tube !!! Cheers !!!

(BBC) Special stamps to mark the 150th anniversary of the London Underground are to go on sale later.

Among the scenes on the 10 stamps are a steam locomotive, builders at work and a carriage of Edwardian passengers.

They have been issued by the Royal Mail in celebration of the world's oldest underground transport network.

The London Mayor said they were "a fitting celebration of London Underground's rich heritage". .............(more)

The Metropolitan line (Metropolitan Railway as it was then) is a sub-surface line, that is to say that it's constructed by cut-and-cover, and only just below street level. These lines have much larger tunnels and better ventilation, and substantial parts of them are not underground at all, just at the bottom of deep trenches.

The deeper tube lines that came a little later have always been electric.

They date from 1938 and run on the island's sole rail line. Quite cool, though not recommended if you have a bad back, as it's not exactly a smooth ride.
