PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Many Americans have turned to a vegetarian diet for many different reasons. Maybe you just think it will make you generally more healthy. Perhaps you want to trim a few pounds. Maybe you want to supplement your already healthy lifestyle.

However, will you be happier?

Some research suggests that the exact opposite is the truth and Women’s Health recently looked into some of the research and cautions people to be well aware of how going meatless can impact your mental health.

1. That article is poorly worded.

Not sure about the vegan/vegetarian diet causing depression directly , but it is true that some nutrients can only be found in meat or meat products, such as vit B12, DHA, creatinine and vit D3. Thr lack of some of those nutrients, could be manifested as depression.
Of course, taking supplements will solve the problem easily.

2. The article has no

reference to any actual study so no clarification is available. It's all speculation far as I can tell.

I always feel better and happier when I abstain from eating meat and the longer I do that the better I feel and for a much longer time.

3. Since I don't eat meat anymore, I take dietary supplements.

I can't say I miss meat much. (Actually, I don't miss it at all lol)

4. Like when you take an alcoholics booze away, they get depressed.

People who really want meat, and feel forced by circumstances to forgo something the really would rather have are going to tend to feel depressed. I don't see that in any of my vegan and vegetarian friends because they don't feel deprived in any way by their diet. Neither do I. Just make sure you get you B12 from supplements. You used to be able to get B12 from veggies before we got in the habit of washing them. B12 is manufactured by bacteria. It's in meat because the bacteria is in meat.
