During a speech marking International Womens Day, Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he believes above all else women are mothers.
I know there will be some who will be annoyed, but for me a woman is above all a mother, Erdogan told told an audience of women in Ankara, reports AFP. He also urged the audience to protect the family and blamed the capitalist system for enslaving women for profits.
You cannot free women by destroying the notion of family, said Erdogan.
Erdogans views on women have long been criticized by rights advocates. The Turkish president has previously said that women are not equal to men, called the promotion of birth control treason, urged Turkish women to have at least three children, and proposed limits to abortion rights and Caesarean sections.

(4,246 posts)but I would like to hear the GOP candidates address Erdogan's policies.
I really think we need to nail them on women's equality & rights, as well as their thoughts on contraception.
I bet you can substitute erdogan's name for cruz or trump and they would have the a very similar platform.

It's International Women's Day (hear that, ladies? we get a day!), and the United Nations has chosen gender parity as this year's theme. The international body wants to speed up progress towards reaching goals such as ending discrimination and violence against women and providing equal access to education.
"International Womens Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities," reads a U.N. release.
It's also a time to mansplain and make awkward comments about women.
Let's review:
An open letter from Vladimir Putin
Can women have it all? Russian President Vladimir Putin has some thoughts, which he shared in an ode to women.
