Russia is trying to destroy western alliances bc it's weak and that's the only way it can win.

Russia wants a new world-order, a world without the old power-blocs, a world without the dominating weight of "the West", a world without hostility, a world where all countries are equal...

Russia actually does want such a world. You know why?

Because Russia is a small fish in a world of international alliances but would be a big fish if every country were forced to fend for itself.

The West has a network of military alliances e.g. NATO, political alliances e.g. the EU, economic alliances e.g. the Eurozone, cultural alliances via mutually shared moral values...

Russia has none of that.
No military alliance because the Red Army is gone.
No political alliance because the Soviet Union is gone.
A shared economic zone with some other ex-members of the Soviet-Union, but they are refusing a Euro-style unified currency for fear of becoming hostage to Moscow.
What about mutually shared moral values??? Amongst Russia's best friends are Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kirghistan, all of which are ruled by brutal and corrupt dictators.

Russia has no hope of countering the geopolitical weight of "the West" because it has no hope of setting up international alliances of similar weight.

That's why Russia reacts so allergic to anything the West does. Russia is holding onto the tiny sliver of geopolitical influence it has left over from its glory-days.
That's why Russia sees a catastrophe whenever a new member joins NATO. (Georgia, Montenegro...)
That's why Russia got so desperate when civil-war cut the Ukraine in half. Ukraine is one of the cultural heartlands of Russia. And now they have lost half of it to western ideals such as democracy and liberalism.

NATO and the EU are just naturally growing through peaceful means. They are getting stronger over time.
And that wouldn't be a problem to Russia if Russia were also expanding its influence and also getting stronger over time at equal pace.
But Russia has big trouble entering and creating such alliances. It has a natural disadvantage on that area.
That's why the natural progression of "the West" is a problem for Russia: Because in comparison, "the West" is easily leaving them behind without even trying to and without realizing so.

Russia is the guy who complains when somebody is dating his ex-girlfriends, because nobody is allowed to date his ex-girlfriends because they are HIS ex-girlfriends and he was totally gonna get back together with them one day.

And that's why Russia wanted Trump to win instead of Clinton.

Clinton would have meant a strong atlantic relationship, a strong NATO, maybe deeper economic ties between the US and the EU. Clinton would have put Russia at even more of a geopolitical disadvantage without even trying to or realizing so. Simply by reenforcing the status quo.

Trump is the opposite. Trump is against alliances. Trump means a strengthening of Russia in comparison to "the West" because he is weakening "the West".

Roughly 100,000 Russians emigrated per year during Putin's first reign. (Mainly to the West, and especially to London, no less.)
Who are those Russians? Investors, scientists, artists, writers, thinkers... Pretty much their best and brightest.
IIRC a poll said that 25% of russian academics would leave Russia to settle down elsewhere if they could.

Then came Medvedjev and the emigration scaled down.

Then came Putin's second reign and it shot up again to 100,000 per year.

I love Obama.

But two things he said had consequences he could not have anticipated: He baited both Putin and the Thrice Humped Moose 45.

He said the above about Putin's sphere of influence. I would not be surprised if that was what spurred this recent hacking-on-speed and Putin's machavellian schemes to bring down our electoral system.

And he baited Dolt45 at the WH Correspondents' dinner. I would bet money that Obama's comments that night were what made the Moose decide to run.
