The Communist Party claims to have brought prosperity and equality to China. Here’s the real impact of its rule

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is in full swing to prepare for the 100th anniversary of its founding this week, with an intense publicity push to crow about its achievements.

However, the CCP has little to celebrate in terms of what it has done for China. Its chief achievement has been how it has managed to survive and stay in power for so long.

So, what exactly does the CCP lay claim to, and where does the truth lie?

1. Chinese sovereignty

The top claim on the list is that the CCP unified the country and secured its independence through the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The CCP had accused the previous government, led by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), of being a puppet of the imperialist US.

Authoritarians always try to take credit for every good thing that happens, and blame their enemies for every bad thing that happens. They are too frail and frightened (since they have no legitimacy) to look their failures in the eye. That applies to communists, fascists, MAGAs, and every other authoritarian group and individual out there.

The view this person presents of the Nanking regime of China under Gen. Chiang Kai-shek could only be achieved by Pollyanna employing spectacles with such a heavy rose tint their very transperancy would be questionable.

It was a corrupt brutal dictatorship just like the regime it imposed when it escaped to Taiwan. It is only in recent times that Taiwan became a democracy. The so called protectors of Chinese culture in the countryside were equally corrupt feudal landlords who took everything they could from the miserable peasants. The government officials civil and military in the Republic were equally corrupt. The wealthy "protectors of Chinese culture" stole everything that wasn't nailed down. That's why they lost the civil war, they had no legitimacy and were despised by the population at large.

Americans are still lost in their fantasies about China. Similar fantasies were constructed about Vietnam before we lost the war there.

Read James Bradley's book The China Mirage, The Hidden History of American Disaster in Asia. The US did sponsor the KMT government. Virtually all the aid given to them was stolen by the Soong family that Chiang married into.
