LONDON (Reuters) – British police have questioned CNN host Piers Morgan in connection with allegations of phone-hacking at the Daily Mirror, a newspaper he formerly edited, local media reported on Friday.

Morgan, a former judge on America’s Got Talent who replaced Larry King on CNN in 2011, was interviewed by police in December, he said in a statement to the Guardian newspaper.

Morgan, 48, has always denied any involvement in phone hacking. Trinity Mirror, which publishes the Mirror, declined to comment and there was no immediate comment from a spokeswoman for Morgan. CNN could not be immediately reached for comment.

Operation Golding is the inquiry into phone-hacking at the Mirror newspaper and was a spin-off from a long-running investigation into similar criminal allegations centered on Rupert Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World newspaper.

has been tracking Piers on this for some time

It's a very popular political rumors blog but he's broken some big stories on it - including some of the phone hacking stuff. One positive thing about his blog is that he doesn't just make the allegation - he often tends to back it up with some sort of evidence.

A year or two ago, I looked into Piers and the phone hacking allegations. My conclusion was that it didn't look good for Piers and my limited respect for him dissipated. Given what some of the others in the UK media have gone through, I was surprised Piers didn't get his feet held to the fire more than they were. Maybe more is coming.

Regardless, with that dark cloud over him before he joined CNN, I thought it was a disgrace for CNN to replace Larry King with him. Not that Larry was perfect but there was a time, when Turner ran CNN, that I respected it as a news outlet. Stooping to people like Piers is part of the reason why I don't watch CNN much anymore and lack much of the respect that I once had for it. I find it hard to believe they could not find a capable American to do that job.
