Number of U.S. troops to fight Ebola may reach 4,000

The military’s mission to fight the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa is ramping up to potentially include as many as 4,000 troops and uniformed health officials are hammering out detailed protocols in the event a service member gets infected with the often-fatal disease, a Pentagon official said Friday.

A Navy-run military lab is there testing blood samples to confirm any possible infections among the deployed troops, said Rear Adm. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.

Beyond Liberia, several dozen U.S. troops are in nearby Senegal to provide aviation support and “set up an air bridge, should we need to use it for evacuations,” Kirby said.

The 3,200 soldiers deploying to Africa come from multiple units across the Army. The largest contingent comes from Fort Campbell, home to the 101st Airborne Division. More than 1,800 soldiers from there will deploy, and they will provide medical and logistical support, as well as site security, to the joint task force in Monrovia, Liberia.

The soldiers belong to these units: 101st Airborne Division headquarters, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 86th Combat Support Hospital, 44th Medical Brigade, 16th Military Police Brigade.

More than 500 soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas, will deploy.

They belong to the 1st Medical Brigade, the 36th Engineer Brigade and the 85th Civil Affairs Brigade.

Another 500 soldiers will deploy from the 1st Armored Division’s Aviation Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas. These soldiers will provide lift capability in the area of operations.

Fort Carson, Colorado, is sending about 160 soldiers from the 615th Engineer Company, 52nd Engineer Battalion; and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will send about 120 soldiers to provide engineer and public affairs support.

Other deploying troops include about 10 soldiers from the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland; and about 100 civil affairs, combat support and combat service support soldiers from Fort Eustis, Virginia, and Georgia’s Fort Benning and Fort Stewart.
