Google's Eric Schmidt North Korea trip 'unhelpful', says US

Mr Schmidt is planning a trip to North Korea, according to South Korea’s foreign ministry, on what is reportedly a humanitarian mission led by a US politician.

Eric Schmidt, a staunch advocate of global internet access, reportedly plans to travel to the country that has the world’s most restrictive internet policies.

Google has so far refused officially to confirm the visit, which was reported by the Associated Press and Wall Street Journal as being part of a humanitarian mission led by former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.

But Victoria Nuland of the US State Department said the timing of the trip is "unehlpful".
