UNRWA chief calls for donors to fulfil their Gaza pledges

4/24/2015

Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Robert Turner yesterday called on donors to fulfil their commitments and provide more financial support for the Gaza Strip.

Turner told reporters at a press club in Brussels that he was frustrated by the donors' lack of commitment to the pledges they made during the Cairo summit.

"I am in Brussels to talk about the disastrous situation not only for the people of Gaza, but also for the humanitarian organisations teams less than a year after the last war in Gaza," he said.

Turner stressed that the situation in Gaza is characterised by famine and frustrations, noting that his agency's recent figures on the situation in Gaza confirms beyond any doubt the amount of suffering and disaster experienced by the people of Gaza, especially homeless families and children without schools.

1. Two types of articles at this website - pro-Hamas propaganda editorials and plagiarism

As with much of the garbage at "Middle East Monitor", there is no byline for this article.

This usually means that they just lifted an article from another site without crediting them.

This one seems to be plagiarized from Islamic News Daily:

http://www.islamicnewsdaily.com/nations/gulf/palestine/unrwa-chief-calls-donors-fulfil-gaza-pledges/

Regarding the content of the plagiarized article, it seems to be a common phenomenon for European and Middle Eastern countries to pledge aid for Palestinians but then not actually provide that aid.

I'll reach out and ask them if the article is their original work or if they got it from another source.

It's hard when these sites don't identify who wrote their articles or provide a way to reach their journalists but I'll see if I can make any progress.

How do you know where it was published first? Are you just going by the dates listed on the sites? (That's not all that reliable)

Islamic News Daily seems to claim that it is their original work. Middle East Monitor just posted it with no attribution. I'll see if I get a response from either.

I'd love to know who did the actual reporting.

Here is their response:

Hello Our source was Quds net

"الاونروا" تدعو المانحين لتنفيذ التزاماتهم في غزة

(They emailed me the text of what I assume is the original Quds net article in Arabic)

12. I suspect Hamas diverting materials to resume tunnel building might have something to do with it
Sun Apr 26, 2015, 09:16 AM

A Hamas-affiliated website revealed on Sunday that the movement’s armed wing was continuing to dig tunnels, even after Operation Protective Edge.

In an investigative report titled “Kassam’s Shovels Continue to Dig Tunnels after the War,” the site said that members of Izzadin Kassam were continuing to work in the tunnels like “beehives.”

According to the al-Resalah site, the Hamas members “see every inch they dig as a place where an Israeli soldier would be kidnapped or killed.”

Al-Resalah’s reporter Mahmoud Foda said he visited one of the tunnels in an undisclosed location in the Gaza Strip.
