Israel to fly premature surrogate babies out of Nepal by helicopters

The 24 infants born in recent days to surrogate mothers in Nepal are waiting with their Israeli parents to be evacuated following the lethal earthquake which struck the area on Saturday morning.

Nine of the infants were born premature and one is in serious condition. The Foreign Ministry told Ynet that it planned to fly out the families in helicopters from Nepal to neighboring India because the airport in Kathmandu was closed.

The babies will fly to Israel from India. The ministry said the process was complex but was being undertaken "transparently with the Nepalese."

President Reuven Rivlin said on Saturday night, "Our hearts and thoughts are with the nation of Nepal who are dealing with a terrible disaster, and with our loved ones who are in danger and distress."

4. Emergency Relief For Earthquake Struck Nepal
Sat Apr 25, 2015, 07:56 PM
Apr 2015

Summary
This project will see IsraAID send an emergency relief team to Nepal to help with relief efforts, distribute emergency supplies, provide medical services, and help government authorities respond to the situation

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
On Saturday 25th of April, 2015, at 11:56 am local time, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal, and its capital Kathmandu. A Metropolis of over 2.5 million people, the Kathmandu Valley is also the most earthquake vulnerable city in the world, with construction often very poor, and infrastructure nearly non-existent. The full extent of the damage remains unknown, but initial reports suggest massive damage and loss of life, with the death toll rising to 686 within the first few hours.

How will this project solve this problem?
IsraAID will deploy its emergency relief team to provide food, water, and relief items, medical services, and psycho-social services to devastated communities within the Kathmandu Valley and outside. The immediate concerns are basic supplies, shelter, and medical services for the injured

Seems to be a pretty standard response (in addition to providing aid and support).

These are babies that were born in the last few days, not fetuses.

Why would they not be Israeli citizens if their parents are Israelis?

So they are also Israeli citizens.

Criticizing Israel for an act of such care is kind of sickening actually.

Serious question: Would you praise them for NOT doing so?

that you and others are completely ignoring the FACT these flights were RETURN flights back to Israel that had physicians on board to help with the earthquake victims.

Three newborns were ferried to Israel on a small military aircraft that had delivered an advance team of doctors to Nepal to boost rescue efforts after Saturday's devastating earthquake.

But leave it to the Israel sucks brigade to leave that out of the story. Now don't forget to alert my post.

just "forgot" to mention:

Israel's military has already dispatched an 80-member search and rescue team to Nepal and planned to send other aircraft with a field hospital and medical personnel later on Monday.

Same link as above.

I've remarked about this before.

Incredible that at any given time there are 24 surrogate babies for Israeli clients in Nepal alone. I wonder how long before all childbirth is outsourced to the third world?

"I wonder how long before all childbirth is outsourced to the third world?"

Can you actually be asking this?

There are couples for whom surrogacy is one of the only options to have children (gay couples for example).

The United States is the most popular country for surrogacy. Pretty sure that is not in "the third world".

which they are, systemically. Commercial surrogacy, even in Nepal, costs nearly 100k. By the time the doctors, lawyers and agencies take their cut, the women is lucky to get about 3k out of the deal. Even the most rapacious pimp would struggle to filch their charges out of that much money:-

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia/2014/03/indian-surrogate-mothers-suffer-exploitation-20143276727538166.html

This is after she is signed to a contract requiring her to terminate the pregnancy upon request, submit to invigilation of her diet, her genetics, her medical records, and to promptly give up the child the moment he or she emerges from her body (the agencies commonly have enforcers present at the birth to ensure that this happens smoothly).

The woman is then cast aside, no provision is made for her future care, her counselling, the inevitable issues that come from having your child torn away from you. And why should we give a shit about her anyway? She is just some poor brown anonymous sod, not worth a damn compared to the shiny white people in the photos with their impeccably white child from an impeccably white egg donor.

And yet still that woman is the child's mother. She loves that child, and she remembers it. It is hard wired into the deepest recesses of her humanity. That's why she loves it whether it has a club foot or a cleft lip or Downs Syndrome, unlike the third party purchasers who would simply abandon children if they don't live up to her expectations:-

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-01/mother-of-thai-baby-abandoned-by-surrogate-parents-struggles-to/5642478

And of course, there are the children themselves. I wonder how many of them will journey to try and find the poor wretch that carried and bore them, and end up at a muddy grave where she died, broken and desperately poor. I guess we'll have to wait ten or so years to find out.

Desai is deeply dismayed at India's status as the world capital of surrogacy. The $2.4 billion industry produces an estimated 25,000 babies a year. Thousands of wealthy foreign couples are pouring into the country every year to hire Indian women - driven by poverty into becoming ''biological coolies'' - to bear their children at a fraction of the cost elsewhere.

Rotunda Clinic in Mumbai has eight Australian couples among its clients. But not all commissioning parents are Western couples.

Estimates suggest that almost half are Indians based abroad and, increasingly, many are Western gay couples.

As the industry grows, so does its seamy underbelly.

''In our research, we came across a woman who was given 25 cycles of IVF treatment,'' says Ranjana Kumari, director of the Centre for Social Research in Delhi.

''Another was forced to carry four embryos in her womb to maximise the chances of pregnancy as against the international practice of one embryo or, at the very most, two.''
