A UN security council resolution being drafted by France and New Zealand plans to set an 18-month deadline for completion of talks leading to the creation of a Palestinian state.
Details of the draft resolution disclosed to the French newspaper Le Figaro emerged on Thursday amid warnings that if no agreement was reached in that timeframe, France would go ahead and unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state.
Pressure appears to be mounting on Israelis and Palestinians, not least from Europe, to return to the negotiating table after a damaging hiatus in the peace process of more than a year.
According to sources familiar with the resolution, however, it is unlikely to be tabled until after the end of negotiations between Tehran and world powers over a deal on Irans nuclear programme due to be completed by 30 June and probably not before September.

Then the good and reasonable Israeli and Palestinian people come together and reach an agreement with the help of other reasonable people in Europe, North America, and elsewhere.
Compromise is a word that needs to enter more people's lexicons.

Trying to force Israel to negotiate with a dictator and a terrorist group is bat shit crazy.

But, hey, we get it. negotiations get in the way of WAR WAR WAR so a certain ideological segment has to oppose them.

(16,252 posts)But yeah, given that Israel is surrounded by dictators they have no choice but to talk to them.

(68,868 posts)They also were extremely cozy with the regime in South Africa. Israel has never had any moral compunction in dealing with dictators.
So you've already conceded that Israel has no problem negotiating with authoritarian figures, so really you just want an excuse to avoid negotiations with the Palestinians.
As far as negotiating with Hamas is concerned,

(16,252 posts)It has to be done, just like the US has to talk to the gulf states.
But negotiating with a dictator and a terrorist group about a peace agreement is just stupid, if the will of the people are not behind the results how can it be binding? Whats to stop the next dictator from annulling the agreement?

I mean, that's even beyond what Shelly Adelson and Bill Kristol are willing to say.
Well done.

(58,724 posts)Israeli, like the US (and most other countries), has no problems cutting deals with non-democracies that behave in a friendly manner towards them.
I don't, however, agree that Egypt is Israel's strongest ally after the US.

Abbas: Israel and Hamas holding secret talks
Israel and Hamas are holding secret talks over a number of issues, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
Abbas, who is visiting Jordan, was quoted by a number of media outlets there as saying during a dinner with Jordanian and Palestinian officials that he has a full protocol of the purported talks between Hamas and Israel.
According to Abbas, the secret talks are being held at a time when Hamas continues to issue baseless accusations against the PA.
The Amman-based Ad-Dustour newspaper reported that the negotiations between Hamas and Israel were focused on a variety of issues, including the possibility of establishing a seaport for the Gaza Strip.

(90,061 posts)I imagine heads are waggling and there is muttering that "something must be done", but how much action that might result in would be hard to say. That would require agreement about more concrete things. But if it actually gets tabled after the Iran deal is done, that should be illuminating.
