Netanyahu: Syria, Iran pursue "second front" in Golan Heights
Moscow (dpa) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday that Syria and Iran are attempting to create a "second front" in the disputed Golan Heights region that borders Israel and Syria.
Israel seized much of the Golan Heights during a brief war with Syria in the late 1960s.
"Iran with the help of the Syrian army is trying to create a second front in the Golan Heights against us [Israel]," Netanyahu said, according to the Interfax news wire.
Putin replied that the Syrian army is incapable of going to Israel because it is busy trying to preserve the current Syrian government, which is mired in civil war.
