Related: About this forumTrump, Israel and the Jewish vote
Ivanka Trump, daughter of Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, went through a transformation six years ago: She converted to Judaism. She then changed her name to Yael, and now leads a traditional Jewish lifestyle keeping kosher and observing the Sabbath, together with her husband, Jared Kushner, son of a rich New Jersey family.
Ivanka-Yael, 33, a former model and current businesswoman working alongside her father, is now expecting her third child.
Donald Trump recently published a photo of his granddaughter, Ivanka and Jared's eldest child, standing next to her mother in the kitchen, preparing Friday night dinner ahead of the Sabbath. I never planned on having a Jewish daughter, Trump said, but I'm very glad it happened.
The Kushner family recently held a fundraiser for Trump in their New Jersey mansion, but despite the family connection, Trump has mostly managed to frighten the Jewish Americans whose votes he covets. US Jews traditionally vote Democrat: In the past two presidential elections roughly 75 percent of them ended up on Barack Obama's side. I have a lot of Jewish friends who support Obama and I ask why, Trump recently said in an interview. I can't explain it, he said, they give him money, campaign donations, advice. I don't understand it. Obama is Israel's greatest enemy. In another statement, Trump said that Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry sold Israel out on the Iran nuclear deal, adding that if he became president, he would support any unilateral Israeli action against Iran. After the decline in Israeli-American relations during Obama's presidency, Republicans hoped Jewish Americans might be persuaded to switch their picks in the coming elections. Trump's ascent has disrupted that; the brash real-estate billionaire simply frightens Jewish voters, and the Republican establishment is well aware of it. Over 20 percent of Jewish voters have supported a Republican presidential candidate in the past. If Trump becomes the party nominee, concerns are that the number will shrink in 2016. Trump says he's a great ally of Israel, and takes care to refer to Prime Minister Netanyahu as a friend. He was against the Iran deal, and despite the fact that he doesn't know the difference between Hamas and Hezbollah (he promised he'll learn in the future), he does believe Israel needs to be strengthened.

But unlike what's sometimes assumed in Israel, Jewish Americans don't vote for presidential candidates based solely on their positions regarding the Jewish nation. What really determines the way they vote are issues of economics, human rights, and religious freedoms. Most American Jews can better connect to Democratic candidates' positions, and the rich among them tend to generously donate to their campaigns. The members of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) worriedly watch the Trump horror show, seeing the intolerant shadow his positions cast over the entire party. When Trump called Mexican immigrants drug dealers and rapists, Jewish stomachs turned: Their ancestors came to America from Europe, and when Trump puts such labels on an entire segment of the population, it reminds them of the anti-Semitism their family had to contend with before arriving in the US. But Trump doesn't really care. He doesn't need their donations. The Jewish millionaires of the Republican party observe his success with shocked looks on their faces. He isn't a part of them, he doesn't represent them, and his arrival has made them irrelevant. As of now, they don't have much influence over the presidential race.
Even the Jewish connection, via his daughter, hasn't gotten Trump significant support in the community, which can't ignore one simple detail: Among his supporters are some of the most racist organizations and bodies in the United States. The Jews will never ally with these.

(58,724 posts)Israeli Jews are some of the most liberal in the world.
In fact, the most rightwing Jews in Israel tend to be Americans who moved there.

Jewsdont want Arabs in the coalition; Arabswant them. A considerable majority of the Jewish public (64%) opposes the inclusion of Arab parties in the coalition to be formed after the elections. In the Arab public, not surprisingly, a majorityalbeit not very large (56%)would like to see Arab parties in the coalition.
The ideological rift between American Jews and Israeli Jews is as vast as the difference between Barack Obama and Dick Cheney.
You are quite obviously misinformed about Israel.
Israel is a rightwing, proto-apartheid state. And supporting Israel is a rightwing cause in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The liberals that do support Israel in the US are "liberal except for Israel."

(58,724 posts)Israeli Jews surveyed about Romney vs. Obama has nothing to do with how liberal they are. It is interesting that you are only able to see Israel through the American political lens. You are unable to recognize or even acknowledge how different Israel is from the United States.

(68,868 posts)Cherry-picking photos is a pretty laughable way to try to make an argument. I would ask you to post pictures of Muslims marrying Jews, or two men marrying each other, in Israel, but oopsy daisy that's not legal there.
Again, since apparently bolding this stat wasn't enough to draw it to your attention:
Benjamin Netanyahu is a racist, rightwing extremist. And he's the most dominant political force in Israel's history.
And he's the most liberal member of its current government.
The US's young people are more liberal and committed to justice than the older generations.
Israel's young people are a bunch of bloodthirsty wingnuts who support apartheid.

Support for Israel to eventually live in peace with its neighboring countries also fell significantly, from 28.4 percent 12 years ago to 18.2 percent last year. This is the third such survey of young people conducted by the two organizations in the past 12 years.
The study was carried out in July 2010, among a representative sample of Jewish and Arab youth. It included 1,600 participants, 800 aged 15-18 and 800 21-24, which is considered a relatively large group.
The right wing enjoyed a clear majority of support among the young people surveyed. Among Jews, the numbers stood at 57 percent and 66 percent for the two age groups respectively, while those who said they considered themselves to be left wing made up only 13 percent and 10 percent of those respondents.
The support for the right rose overall from 48 percent to 62 percent during the study's 12-year period, while support for the left fell from 32 percent to 12 percent.
As to the possibility of peace with the Palestinians, 755 of the Jewish respondents said they do not believe negotiations will lead to peace, and most prefer that the present situation continue

When asked about Israels Jewish and democratic character, 41% of Jewish students responded that the states Jewish character is more important than its democratic one, while 25% answered the opposite.
Among Arab students, 96% responded they believe Israel should be democratic first and Jewish second.
...
In an alarming trend, only 28% of Jewish respondents said they condemned so-called price tag attacks associated with religious, far-right Jewish groups, with students from a traditional home surprisingly more likely to decry those attacks than their secular peers.
Such incidents of violence or vandalism target Palestinians or Israeli security forces and are asserted to be payback for actions against the settlement enterprise.
Of the students who identified as right-wing, 48% condoned or said they understood the rationale behind such attacks.
This is how they raise their children--as racist supporters of apartheid and acts of race-based terror.
The US will do itself a mighty favor when it washes its hands of Israel, both geopolitically and for its own internal value system.

(58,724 posts)The Israeli tax rate for the top bracket is almost double the US rate, and begins at a much lower threshold. If you make over the equivalent of 100,000 dollars you pay a 50 percent tax rate.
Israel provides free universal pre-school for all its citizens as well social security benefits that are not in danger of running out. Also higher education is subsidized by the government which pays 70 percent of all tuition costs.
In terms of abortion, Israel has much more liberal policies than what one finds across most of Europe - and abortions are covered by government health care.
Israel is essentially a Democratic-Socialist state along the lines of what Bernie Sanders envisions for the US.
