Op-ed: Relentless Palestinian extremism has now even managed to persuade the center-left opposition that Israeli readiness for compromise is insufficient. Whats needed is a unified effort to stop the Palestinians filling their peoples heads with murderous hostility
================================================================
...Abbas may well be deploying his forces to keep a lid on clashes in the West Bank, but hes presiding over an ongoing, strategic demonizing of Israel and Israelis via his education system, political and spiritual leadership and mainstream and social media that positively guarantees Palestinian violence and terrorism. So effective is this process that, nowadays, when a young Palestinian has a row at home, feels depressed, or wants to make a name for him or herself, the default response is to grab a knife and go kill the nearest vulnerable Jew. And so, last week, we buried Dafna Meir. And today, we buried Shlomit Krigman....
...While the United States and much of the international community refuse to internalize this, the simple, bleak fact is that everything Arafat, Abbas and Hamas have done since the collapse of the Bill Clinton-hosted Camp David 2000 attempt at forging a deal has persuaded Israelis that they dare not relinquish territory to the Palestinians, despite the imperative to separate in order to maintain a Jewish, democratic Israel.
....In the years after Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, the rocket fire intensified, the Palestinians gave Hamas a parliamentary majority in elections, and Hamas ousted Abbass forces from the Strip in hours underlining to Israelis the dangers of leaving adjacent territory, and the ease with which Islamist forces could seize power in any vacuum. The latest Israel-Hamas conflict, in 2014, only re-emphasized the danger: If a single rocket fired by Hamas that got through the Iron Dome defenses and landed a mile from Ben-Gurion Airport could send two-thirds of foreign airlines fleeing from Israel, including all the American carriers, how could Israel possibly entertain the idea of leaving the West Bank? Hamas would be running the show within days, and our entire country would be paralyzed and isolated.
The irony, of course, is that if the Palestinians had been capable of hiding their hatred for just a short period after we left Gaza, if they had managed to pretend for even a brief time that their hearts were set on peaceful coexistence, we probably would have withdrawn unilaterally from much of the West Bank as well.
Instead, Palestinian words and deeds have persuaded mainstream Israelis those who dont want to rule the Palestinians, dont want to expand settlements in areas we do not envisage retaining under any permanent accord, dont want to have to live by the sword forever that no partnership is viable at present. Theyve even managed to kill off the optimism of the leader of the Israeli opposition, Isaac Herzog, who sadly concluded last week that a two-state solution is simply unrealistic: He yearns for it, said Herzog in a radio interview. But its not possible right now.

(6,171 posts)possible. Not doing anything to change the current situation will lead to the one-state solution by default, and I'm not so sure that's what "liberal democrats" in the US want.
So, in the future, when the bi-national state is inevitable, at least Horovitz can proudly say he did absolutely nothing to stop it...

Glad you understand that now.
International pressure isn't going to change the Israeli public's mind either, so the Wallstrom's of the world are going to have to reconsider how to really achieve peace there. Maybe consider pressuring Abbas to stop the incitement, stop rewarding terror. Abbas isn't a child, he needs to be held responsible for his part in all this. Cutting off all funding to the PA until they start building real, genuine bridges for peace b/w Palestinians and Jews might achieve something positive.

(45,850 posts)propaganda claims that Abbas and the PA incite the terror wave, that it's based on absolutely nothing but Jew hate, while security admits that it is very dependent on Abbas's PA security to help it enforce against and detect suspected terror activity - seems rather conflicting
Propaganda is what the Rightwing settler driven and supporting Israeli government want to force feed the public, hoping to convinxce people of this BS , security deals in actual reality of situation and tells us they and the PA work hand in glove

(30,109 posts)This is a strange phenomenon, as the elements which are inciting and pushing the stabbers and drivers to the streets are the mostly the same ones who are working intensively, and quite sophisticatedly, to prevent an escalation. This absurd dichotomy has prevented the wave of terror from turning into a real intifada.

The international community does not accept buses blowing up in Tel Aviv, he said. But when a settler or soldier is stabbed while on occupied land, nobody asks any questions. We must struggle in a way that keeps the world with us.

(45,850 posts)oh well, you can cry and wail that the brutal Israeli military occupation and settler colonization of the West bank has no relationship to what is happening in the West Bank and Israel but few really believe that

The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, said today that 'the terror wave is a natural response to the occupation.'
There are millions of people in the world whose lives are harder than those of the Palestinians. In Africa, in Asia, in the Middle East. There are hundreds of millions of people in the world for whom the UN didn't create a special body and to whom the UN didn't send billions of dollars (and then stood to one side while a corrupt government stole it).
For some reason those people don't think there is anything, anything at all, which gives them license to take a knife and stab a mother of six. To take a knife and stab a woman who is five months pregnant. To take a knife and stab a wonderful 23 year old who had never harmed anyone.
Terrorism against innocent civilians can not be justified, no-one should provide excuses for it. No-one, especially not the UN Secretary General, should say that terrorism is the result of something. Terrorism against innocent civilians is the result of nothing except the murderous insanity of the perpetrators.

Just as vile, revolting, and ugly as saying the Dawabshe and Abu Khdeir murders were a natural response to 100 years of unrelenting Palestinian terror against Jews.
It's incitement actually.
