U.S. summons Israeli envoy in protest of 'outrageous' Disengagement Law repeal

Senior U.S. official tells Ynet Biden administration 'exhausted' from chasing the almost-daily controversies unfolding in Israel like a 'rabbit in a hole' as patience with Israel's hardline government is wearing thin

The U.S. State Department summoned Israeli Ambassador Michael Herzog overnight Wednesday in a rare move to protest the "outrageous" passage of an amendment to the Disengagement Law by the Knesset that will allow Israelis to return to evacuated settlements in the northern West Bank.

According to the State Department, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman conveyed at the meeting Washington's concern over the legislation and called to avoid actions that could increase tensions before the upcoming holidays — referring to the holidays of Passover, Easter and Ramadan which overlap this year.

A senior U.S. official told Ynet that Washington was very upset with the "outrageous" move and what he deemed its hasty passage. He added that the Biden administration was "exhausted" from 'chasing' the almost-daily controversies unfolding in Israel like a "rabbit in a hole".

Summoning the Israeli envoy signals that the Americans' patience with Israel's hardline government is wearing thin with each new crisis — from home demolitions in East Jerusalem, through new settlement construction, to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's provocative statements calling to "wipe out" the Palestinian town of Huwara and claiming "there is no such thing" as a Palestinian people next to a flag showing a "Greater Israel" which incorporated the territory of Jordan.

This is the first such call-up of an Israeli ambassador by Washington in 13 years.

So far, as for Americans, thoughts and prayers predominate, with diplomacy in 3rd place.

Knesset member calls for return of Israelis to settlements in Gaza

Following the Knesset's approved repeal of the 2005 law on disengagement from northern West Bank settlements, some members of the government's right-wing coalition indicated that the return of Israelis to Gush Katif in the southern Gaza Strip would be their next goal.

Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) MK Limor Son Har-Melech called for the repeal of the Gush Katif disengagement law and the restoration of the four evacuated West Bank settlements as soon as possible.

"We have infinite joy for a historic correction, but we must continue the mission until it is completed," Limor Son Har-Melech said in his speech to the Israeli parliament.

"Our task now is to ensure that the four settlements (in the northern West Bank) that were evacuated are restored and our other mission is to return to those in Gush Katif and rebuild them," she continued.

"The cancellation of this law is the beginning of the correction of a historical injustice," said National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir after the vote. "I am proud to participate in the return of the people of Israel in all regions of our country," he added.

I did speak of the topic today with a couple members of a non-political facebook group.

None of my Israeli friends has spoken to me ever on the topic. I don’t know what areas they live in either.

The Disengagement Law ?
Or the recent amendment to the Disengagement Law ?

I dont know why your Israeli friends would be reluctant to discuss the topic
or why what areas they live in is relevant .

Normally we are not shy to discuss our politics .

In the spirit of sharing I give you an op ed by DAVID HOROVITZ which
IMHO is brilliant and says it all .
