Israeli policymakers are heralding the fact that the countrys Jewish population has passed the 6 million mark for the first time a historically significant number, they say, because thats the number of Jews who were killed in the Holocaust.
Its a great joy to know there are more than 6 million Jews in Israel, Dina Porat, chief historian of Yad Vashem, Israels Holocaust museum, told the Guardian.
Its cause for celebration, but the 6 million figure doesnt entirely put Israeli Jews at ease.
The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics released its own figures this week, predicting that the number of Arabs in Israel and Palestine will equal the number of Jews by 2016 and exceed it by 2020, buoyed in part by the Palestinians overall higher birthrate.

(58,724 posts)Unless you consider the West Bank and Gaza to be part of Israel, which I don't think you do.
There are less than 2 million Palestinians living in Israel - which is not even 1/3rd of the Jewish population.

(42,239 posts)No I don't consider the West Bank and Gaza to be part of Israel.
I was simply drawing attention to this being a "bullshit baffles brains" article.

(90,061 posts)I don't believe any of them, but I hadn't seen anything on the demographic issue lately so I put it up.

(115 posts)Which you obviously have. No surprise.
The growing Palestinian population in the combined Israeli and Palestinian Terroritories make a one state solution more palpable to Palestinians and less so for Israelis.
This point was mentioned here http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/01/02/israels-jews-6-million-palestinians-outnumber_n_2394636.html
And this population imbalance doesn't even factor in the possibility of Palestinians getting the Right of Return, in some form or another.

(2,927 posts)... a one-state solution has NEVER been palatable to anyone but a tiny minority of Israelis -- a Palestinian population of 50 million wouldn't make much difference in that.

(115 posts)That doesn't take away from the point being made by the demos in the article, which a couple of people here found some difficulty in understanding. From the Palestinians point of view, a one state solution would be more palpable due to their growing population. Whether or not it is achievable is besides the point.

(58,724 posts)Why is it no surprise that I completely missed the point of the article?

(115 posts)In a previous thread, very recently, you found more reason to complain about a month old article being a month old than the words of Sharon's scumbag son. Speaking about committing nuclear genocide on Gaza doesn't get a blink from you? Not a single peep. But dare some fool come along threatening the same annihilation against Israel and out pours the zealous outrage from people like you on that side of the fence. So when this thread came along and there goes your knee jerk reaction to discredit a legitimate point... I wasn't surprised.

JERUSALEM - The Palestinian statistics bureau estimates that Arabs will outnumber Jews in the Holy Land by the end of the decade, a scenario that could have grave implications for Israel.
The bureau said Tuesday that 5.8 million Arabs live in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. That compares to about 6 million Israeli Jews, according to Israeli data.
It said that based on current birth rates, the two populations would be equal in 2016, and in 2020, Arabs would outnumber Jews by 7.2 million to 6.9 million.
