Israeli police say several Palestinians threw rocks at officers and Jewish worshippers after Muslim prayers in Jerusalem's Old City and 15 have been arrested.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says clashes began when several hundred Palestinians emerged from Friday prayers at a sensitive hilltop compound revered by both Jews and Muslims.
He says masked men threw rocks at police and Jews praying at the nearby Western Wall on the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashana. Two officers were hurt and 15 Palestinians arrested, he said.
The compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, is the holiest site in Judaism. Known to Muslims as the "Noble Sanctuary," it is Islam's third-holiest site.

(25,699 posts)Written in Arabic and Hebrew. It should say, "For god's sake, DON'T BE A DICK."
Sure it seems like common sense, not to throw rocks at people who are praying, or in at least one case, opening fire on them... but apparently some assholes need a reminder.

(25,699 posts)It seems that this might have something to do with a story about Israeli settlers breaking into the mosque from the Moroccan gate, and being escorted through the grounds by Israeli soldiers.
However, the primary source seems to be PressTV so... I'm not totally sold on the story. There are photos that strongly indicate some truth to the story though so I'm not going to just dismiss it out of hand, either.
I stand by my statement that there needs to be a giant "Don't be a dick" sign, however.
Fast edit: Ma'an has the story. If it's a good enough source for Oberliner, it's good enough for me.

(16,299 posts)And it doesn't say anything about anyone breaking into a mosque.
Its about Jews touring the temple mount - clearly a grave provocation for many maan readers.

(4,148 posts)....if you want the truth here it is :
To mark the New Year, some three thousand of the Temple Mount Seekers marched round and round this sensitive compound, blowing the shofar rams horns as loudly as they could. The notorious Rabbi Shamuel Eliyahu, undaunted by his failure to become Chief Rabbi, proclaimed On Rosh HaShana we crown God, and the Mount will become Gods Palace. And in order for it to become Gods Palace, the venerable 1300-year old Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam third holiest site, would in one way or another disappear.
Sheikh Raed Salah of Umm El Fahm has long been warning the Muslim faithful that Al-Aqsa is in danger!. The shofar-blowing march and Rabbi Eliyahus speech added credibility and urgency to the Sheikhs warning, and many of his followers were aroused to a march of their own. Israeli police promptly arrested Sheikh Salah on charges of making inflammatory speeches, but many of his followers did make it to the Mount, and there followed several days of violent clashes, stone throwing and large-scale arrests. Not an auspicious time for the holding of yet another round of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations (but when has there been such a time?). Though unlike on several previous occasions, police took care not to use live ammunition and create new Palestinian martyrs.
