In his address to the conference, Father Nadaf noted that “there are many regimes (in the region) that do not care about equal rights, they only care about catering to an elite that terrorizes the rest of the population, while brushing off the issue of human rights and dehumanizing others.”
But, the Greek Orthodox priest explained, “In Israel, we (non-Jewish minorities) do not experience this.”
Father Nadaf concluded by declaring how “proud” he is to live in Israel, and insisting that “Israel is a shining example of human rights in the Middle East.”

(30,109 posts)...facing the same situations Israel has faced the past 70 years. There simply is no other western nation out there, that faced with the threats Israel has faced for 70 years, would act better than Israel in comparison. I know you'd like to compare Israel to western nations that face little to no threats at all, but we both know that's a bullshit comparison.

(25,699 posts)One, you're so proud of Israel for setting a better example than Syria. It is astounding that this is a point of pride, an argument you actually think is worth making.
And then the silly-ass argument "Any western nation would act worse in the same situation!" There's just no rational basis of comparison to other nations, except your own assumptions and magical thinking. Wondering what Sweden would do in Israel's place is a lot like wondering what French music would sound like if Salmon were the dominant species on the planet.
Interestingly there's no caveat to human rights that says "well, you know, they had a bad day, so I guess they can conduct an ethnic cleansing..."

And there is a rational basis of comparison to other western nations. Look at how they act in times of war against their enemies. Think about NATO, the US, UK, and France going to war thousands of miles away from their borders and compare their performance to that of Israel. Israel's record is far better. Now imagine if war is taken to their own shores and borders. They'd be even worse.

In practice, any person who marries an Israeli citizen is entitled to begin a procedure that will eventually lead to their recognition as a resident or a citizen of the state.
This right was honored, in general, until just over a decade ago. In May 2002, at the height of the Second Intifada, the Israeli government decided to freeze this procedure for residents of areas governed by the Palestinian Authority who had married Israeli citizens. This decision initially took the shape of a temporary provision, and was backed by security arguments. In 2003, the order was anchored in an amendment to the “Citizenship and Entry into Israel (Temporary Provision),” and is subject to annual renewal. Over the years, the law was also extended to cover citizens of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, all of which are defined as enemy states.
After coming under strong criticism, which included appeals to Israel’s High Court of Justice, the law was amended in 2005. The amendment kept the overall denial of residential status in place, but granted women over 25 and men over 35 who married Israeli citizens permission to obtain a permit to stay in Israel, on the condition that they would not be deemed a criminal or security risk. The amendment, while reducing the scope of the population affected by the law, is racist in character.
It is estimated that the amendment to the Citizenship Law has so far impacted 20,000 married couples, by leaving one person without a citizenship or residency status. The affected individuals are denied the right to health care, social security and a dignified life. The following short testimonies are told by the women whose lives are affected daily by the amendment to the Citizenship Law.

(12,155 posts)Laughing at a questionable source does nothing to establish the truth. Even the National Enquirer is factual on occasion.
If you had not responded as you did, it would be on azurnoir but since you laughed at his/her source it's up to you to show why this particular claim is false or not.
Edited to add: I am not sure that there are very many reputable news organs these days. Most seem like blogs which recycle each other's "scoops" as news.
I am a cynical skeptic.

the right to marry, etc is secondary to personal security of all the citizens, this is not a difficult concept for those who started to forbid their kids to go to the mall because of fear they might get blown up.
the right to basic security is a far more fundamental right that the state must honor, then honoring a "right"as where an individual person may live.
not to difficult to understand for those concerned with the real fundamental rights of citizens to actually live
