At least 55 American universities and colleges have rejected the American Studies Association membership vote in favor of an academic boycott of Israel.
The number was tracked by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
This remarkable response is a clear declaration that American academia will not be party to the efforts to promote the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, Robert Sugarman, its chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, its executive vice chairman, said in a statement.
The Conference of Presidents said it wrote to each of the institutional members of the ASA outlining why the boycott call is an unjustifiable and blatantly discriminatory act.
The response is very encouraging and we are grateful that so many took the time during a holiday week to respond, the groups leaders said. We continue to urge the rest of the members to speak out against the action and to disassociate from supporting the ASA.

(14,851 posts)New Haven >> Local Jewish leaders and the president of Yale University are responding loudly to a boycott of Israeli academic institutions announced recently by the American Studies Association.
The boycott, which centers on the role of Israeli universities in that countrys treatment of Palestinian scholars, has created a furor among U.S. professors and university presidents. Dozens of schools have spoken out against the boycott in the past week, including officials from Yale, Wesleyan, the University of Connecticut, Harvard, Rutgers, Princeton, MIT, New York University and Cornell.
A handful of schools, including Brandeis University and Indiana University, have taken back their membership in the ASA, a professional organization of about 5,000 scholars who study American history and culture.
Any attempt to close off discussion or dialogue among scholars is antithetical to the fundamental values of scholarship and academic freedom, Yale President Peter Salovey said, in a statement released by the university.

(14,851 posts)Yet?
Because they sure will.
I predict this will ultimately destroy the ASA.
And I will happily make my little contribution to that effort.
I do not think any other association will follow this disaster the ASA brought down upon themselves.
The ASA soon will be history, a case study for scholars.

but from your article
But while Eisgruber notes that his "personal support for scholarly engagement with Israel is enthusiastic and unequivocal," he said he does not intend to denounce the ASA or cut Princeton's institutional ties with the organization.

(14,851 posts)They should organize a block of people sympathetic to that cause to try reverse that decision.
Why not ?
It seems to be working against the ASA.

(14,851 posts)What is Brandeis boycotting for then?
Same reason as the ASA -- Bigotry?

The reason no elected Dems claim Israel is apartheid is.......?
Maybe you're part of the extreme fringe.

(12,804 posts)While Mandel never declared Israel an apartheid state, he never forgot Israel's support of the South African apartheid regeime...
Nelson Mandela was close to Jews, resolutely loyal to Palestinians
And contemporary leaders of Israel refused to attend Mandela's funeral.
Netanyahu skips Mandela memorial. Israelis say are you kidding?

(30,109 posts)So how do u know Tutu is correct?
Let me guess - you support apartheid going on in Lebanon for example against refugees who have no rights there - am I correct? Hell, u probably don't even recognize that as apartheid. Or am I wrong?
Larkspur
(12,804 posts)the mostly white apartheid South African government did to it's indigenous people.
Tutu was speaking from his experience as one who suffered under apartheid, so his words have more weight than yours.

...as Palestine will surely be is in fact supporting a fascist state.
But to answer your specific question, the answer is no. Sharia courts do not make for a fascist state as the US and UK have sharia courts. The difference is that those courts are subordinate to US/UK law.

and before you start attempting a way out of this statement then go on to the next and what is your claiming then? and oh what polls would those be?
28. All states surrounding Israel are fascist theocratic regimes...

Gaza is fascist under Hamas. The PLO is fascist as well.
Do u disagree? I have no reason to believe Palestine will be any different. And according to polling, about 90% of Palestinians prefer to live under sharia law, which doesn't bode well for those who believe Palestinians prefer to live in a secular western style democracy.

(30,109 posts)...that will certainly be ruled by one or the other will be fascist as well?
That's a yes/no question.

But your point is duly noted. Let's turn that around and ask if all elected Dems support apartheid fascist nations like Jordan, Egypt, and (in your opinion) Israel...

(45,850 posts)when you come up with a legitimate query let me know but it does seem you are accusing our Democratic admins of supporting ther formation of a fascist sharia state
