Rocket alert siren, explosions heard in southern Israel

A rocket alert siren was heard in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon's industrial zone Thursday night, and residents also reported hearing at least one strong blast.

The army still hasn't confirmed whether a rocket exploded. Security forces are combing the area for signs of an explosion.

Earlier Thursday, the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council reported that the Iron Dome missile defense system had intercepted a grad rocket fired toward Ashkelon, but the Israel Defense Forces denied this.

At around 2:00 P.M. Thursday, a rocket exploded in an open field in the area, and a rocket alert siren was heard in towns in the regional council. No damage or injuries were reported in either case.
