Group says PA arrested dozens of its members over Abbas criticism

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A political organization in the West Bank said on Saturday that Palestinian Authority security forces arrested dozens of its members in the West Bank after the group criticized President Mahmoud Abbas.

The media office of the pan-Islamist party Hizb al-Tahrir said the PA made the arrests in reaction to an earlier statement that criticized Abbas' suggestion that NATO troops be deployed at the borders of a future Palestinian state.

"The future Palestinian state will be disarmed and without an army and will only have a police force," the statement said.

Hizb al-Tahrir said the PA arrested its members due to the group's refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the Israeli occupation, their rejection of the "international occupation" that Abbas had suggested, and their desire to create a united, pan-Islamic political entity.

So much for free speech in the West Bank.

I've seen in a while more about the international group Hizb ut-Tahrir

Hizb ut-Tahrir (Arabic: حزب التحرير‎ Ḥizb at-Taḥrīr; Party of Liberation) is an international pan-Islamic political organisation. They are commonly associated with the goal of all Muslim countries unifying as an Islamic state or caliphate ruled by Islamic law (sharia) and with a caliph head of state elected by Muslims.[1]

The organization was founded in 1953 as a Sunni Muslim organization in Jerusalem by Taqiuddin al-Nabhani, an Islamic scholar and appeals court judge (Qadi)[2] from the Palestinian village of Ijzim. Since then Hizb ut-Tahrir has spread to more than 40 countries and by one estimate has about one million members.[3] Hizb ut-Tahrir is very active in the West, particularly in the United Kingdom, and is also active in several Arab and Central Asian countries, despite being banned by some governments. The group also has a growing presence in North America, known as Hizb ut-tahrir America, or HTA.

Hizb ut-Tahrir believes the re-establishment of caliphate would provide stability and security to both Muslims and non-Muslims in the predominantly Muslim regions of the world.[4] The party promotes a detailed program for institution of a caliphate that would establish Shariah and carry "the Da'wah of Islam" to the world.[5][6] Hizb ut-Tahrir is also strongly anti-Zionist and calls for the State of Israel, which it calls an "illegal entity," to be dismantled.[7]
