Related: About this forumIsraeli Apartheid Week is a Soviet creation
By Ben Cohen/JNS.org
#Rethink2014 is one of the more creative Twitter hashtags Ive recently encountered. Launched by students opposing the hatefest otherwise known as Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW), the hashtag is designed for incorporation into tweets that explain why this ghastly annual event is a series of calumnies and lies from beginning to end.
Some examples:
I oppose Israel Apartheid Week because I know what apartheid actually means.
I oppose Israel Apartheid Week because Im sitting next to an Arab-Israeli Muslim IDF soldier on the bus in Jerusalem.
I oppose Israel Apartheid Week because it promotes anti-Semitism on campus.
There are literally thousands of tweets in similar fashion, in yet another demonstration of the pushback against the IAW bigots that has, thankfully, gathered pace this year.
My own contribution to the hashtag, I have to confess, might have been a little obscure. I oppose Israeli Apartheid Week because the analogy is a smear invented by the anti-Semitic USSR, I said. But there is, in my view, an important truth here that I want to elaborate on.

(25,699 posts)Let's you and I take a pause from gnawing each others' faces in I/P for a bit...
Have you seen GD lately? Really, have you gone through and read the stuff in there? I wonder if you caught the "gender wars" as some bubbleheads were coining it. Or the current denial of the concept of white privilege. Maybe you caught wind of the surprisingly rabid level of transphobia displayed towards Chelsea Manning, even. Did you see all the group hugs over the Zimmerman verdict?
DU's gotten just a little... weird. And not the good kind of weird like the spastic hippy chick I was dating two years ago, but weird more like if you woke up one day in an episode of Twin Peaks, inspired by Franz kafka. That kind of weird.
I've been wondering about DU's bend towards authoritarian and antidemocratic regimes, and its frequent hatred of hte left and liberalism for some time. Maybe you missed the cheer quad for the massacre of Egyptians and installation of an oppressive military junta over them - maybe not, as a lot of those cheerleaders came from this neck of the woods (DrDon / jessie04 for one)
Have you perhaps seen my internet driftwood theory?

(25,699 posts)The internet is basically an ocean. Like all oceans it has a lot of flotsam drifting around it - driftwood, dead whales, plastic bottles, radioactive giant lizards, shit like that. And every community on the internet - such as DU - is beachfront property on this ocean.
Inevitably, crap washes up on those beaches. And without effort to clear it away, that's where it'll stay. People with beachfront property interested in maintaining their property clean the beach regularly, getting all the flotsam off of it. Abandoned or neglected beachfronts look like this:
And what happens is that all that crap on the beach catches other crap that washes in, making hte pile grow mathematically, if not exponentially in some cases.
DU abandoned moderation in favor of a Three Stooges system that is equal parts apathy and high school popularity contest. As a result, the internet driftwood has been accumulating fairly steadily.
