The Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, said on Saturday his government was willing to accept a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
The Hamas leader spoke at a meeting with 11 European parliamentarians who sailed from Cyprus to the Gaza Strip to protest Israel's naval blockade of the territory. Haniyeh told his guests Israel rejected his initiative.
Clare Short, who served in the cabinet of former British prime minister Tony Blair, asked Haniyeh to repeat his offer. He said the Hamas government had agreed to accept a Palestinian state that followed the 1967 borders and to offer Israel a long-term hudna, or truce, if Israel recognized the Palestinians' national rights.
In response to a question about the international community's impression that there are two Palestinian states, Haniyeh said: "We don't have a state, neither in Gaza nor in the West Bank. Gaza is under siege and the West Bank is occupied. What we have in the Gaza Strip is not a state, but rather a regime of an elected government. A Palestinian state will not be created at this time except in the territories of 1967."

(58,724 posts)AFP Hamas will never recognise Israel and will not accept the conditions laid out by the Middle East peacemaking Quartet, according to the Islamist movements deputy leader.
Speaking late on Saturday, Mussa Abu Marzuq said Hamas, which recently signed a reconciliation deal with the Western-backed Palestinian leadership in the occupied West Bank, would never agree to recognise Israel.
We will not recognise the Zionist entity, he said at a press conference in Gaza City.
Under terms of the deal, Gazas Hamas rulers and the Palestine Liberation Organisation of president Mahmoud Abbas are to work together to form a new unity government which will prepare for national elections.

(26,696 posts)That the 1967 borders are really just a first step to the liberation of all of Palestine?
That's not accepting a two state solution... it's something very different that he's dishonestly calling acceptance of a two state solution.

(30,099 posts)the situation looks worse than ever, yet both sides owe it to their children to stop.
Other conflicts have been resolved, this one can too.

(5,397 posts)A long term peace or hudna. Not a permanent peace treaty. He's been quite specific about those terms too as well as the length of that hudna. It's 10 years, max. In exchange Israel just needs to pull back to the 67 borders, and allow a right of return for palestinian refugees.
Yup. Totally reasonable.

(3,385 posts)The article states that Hamas would offer a Hudna (ten year truce) in exchange for a state in all of the West Bank and Gaza. That's not a reasonable offer and Amira Hass knows it (and so should you). I don't care if Hamas is willing to accept a state in the West Ban and Gaza. I care if they are willing to accept a Jewish state and make peace with it. They've made it absolutely cleat that they aren't. They're just blowing smoke and you should know it.

(30,099 posts)for itself in an official capacity? One that secular Israeli Jews are comfortable with
Bibi and his cabinet writing..that one, the one that does not exist? The acceptance Israel
wanted was to remove any responsibility to RoR. As if it was not clear enough to anyone
paying attention before the blow up with Kerry, Israel has no intentions of ceding any
land to provide for a viable state...and it has never been about security..the occupation
has always made Israel less safe, and they were always willing to wait it out.

(3,385 posts)Not demand everything they would need to win a war to obtain, and then continue the war. Do you honestly think it's reasonable to demand everything and not offer real peace in return?
Jefferson23
(30,099 posts)that includes negotiations for all the tunnel information..everything. Israel only has
its soldiers on the border now and for a reason..they know the casualties for their
side will escalate once they go in..so that is why they're destroying Gaza. They
wish to destroy enough and hope that Palestinians will reject Hamas and blame
Hamas, but the evidence for that twisted thinking is not there. Too many seem
to feel they would rather die quickly than slowly under the siege these last 8 years.
They don't trust Israel...you have to start somewhere, negotiate for that information
in exchange for tangible relief for them.
