Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon have made the destruction of the tunnels emerging from Gaza a main objective of Operation Protective Edge. This is an appropriate and crucial goal given the unexpected threat these tunnels pose.
It isnt clear how long this mission will take. The defense minister, who at the start of the ground offensive said destroying the tunnels would require two or three days, couldnt have known how many there were or exactly where they were located. And it seems more surprises may be in store in this regard.
The tunnel threat gives this operation its legitimacy. The international community apparently recognizes Israels need to remove this threat and is willing to grant Jerusalem the time it needs to do so.

(39,171 posts)and there are no tunnel exits in Israel (they are dug just before tunnels are used). The tunnel entrances are in Gaza hidden in all kinds of buildings. Further more, the tunnels go underneath all those buildings. That is why so many buildings in Gaza are being destroyed.

(1,417 posts)Tunnels under the wire, yes, but many of the tunnels are within the built-up area and seem to be for genuine self-defence.
They were designed with lots of concealed entrances so that when the next Israeli ground offensive got into Gaza proper, Hamas defenders could pop-out and shoot the invaders.
Perhaps this is why the IDF losses have been relatively high and why Netanyahu is determine to destroy them even during any cease-fire.
That being the case, why should the Haaretz correspondent think there is any legitimacy in causing so many casualties just to stop a self-defence measure?
