PA transfers money for salaries of former Gaza govt employees

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority transferred millions of dollars to Gaza on Tuesday for the long-delayed payment of salaries to civil servants of the former Hamas-run government, an official told Ma'an.

The Palestinian official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the money was brought secretly into Gaza through the Erez crossing in a vehicle heavily guarded by Gaza security officers.

Separately, Minister of Social Affairs Shawqi al-Ayasa told Ma'an that each civil servant would receive an initial payment of $1,200 starting Wednesday.

He said the money was transferred "after the necessary international approvals were obtained."

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Ministry of Public Works and Housing on Tuesday began distributing cement to Gazans whose houses were destroyed during Israel's devastating military offensive.

The ministry published a list on their website of the first group of people who are eligible to receive cement to reconstruct their homes.

Each person listed will receive a voucher which shows how much cement they are entitled to based on the damage to their residence.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has begun to rebuild its offices after they suffered extensive damage in Israel's assault. Workers in the ministry are based in temporary offices while the rebuilding takes place.
