Right-wing activist shot during annual Temple Mount event in Jerusalem

Rabbi Yehuda Glick, a well-known US-born right-wing activist, was shot at point blank outside the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem on Wednesday night.

Glick was shot in his upper body during an annual 'Israel Returns to the Temple Mount' event organized by the Temple Mount and Eretz Yisrael Faithful Movement. The event was attended by MKs and notable right-wing activists, among them Deputy Minister Eli Ben Dahan, MK Moshe Feiglin, MK Miri Regev and Hagai Ben Artzi - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's brother-in-law.

The Jerusalem Police District spokesman said the shooter was on a motorcycle.

Glick is a central activist in Temple Mount movements and a symbol of the struggle for Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount. Police and the Shin Bet have often barred Glick from the Temple Mount and he has been fighting legal battles against Israeli law enforcement authorities against these bans, some of which have been successful.

Senior gov't officials rain criticism of worsening security situation in Jerusalem, call on prime minister to regain control of the security situation in the capital.

A political storm is brewing in the wake of the attempted assassination of a right-wing activist Rabbi Yehuda Glick on Wednesday night. "No one has taken control of the security situation in the capitol for months. Instead of decrying a war against the US the prime minister should take control of Jerusalem," senior government officials said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the officials said, "was losing Jerusalem."

Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said the assassination attempt, was "a crossing of a red line made in blood."
"Security is not brought with words but with deeds, and I call on the prime minister to restore the sovereignty of Israel and its capitol and immediately," Bennett said.

6. Hamas applauds shooting of right-wing activist

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) – Hamas on Thursday applauded the shooting attack targeting right-wing Israeli lawyer and rabbi Yehuda Glick.

A spokesman said Glick “is known for leading right-wing Jewish groups into the al-Aqsa mosque compound.”

In a statement, Fawzi Barhoum said that the “operation was a natural response to the ongoing Israeli crimes and raids on al-Aqsa mosque and Palestinian holy places and attacks on worshipers as well as displacement of Jerusalemites.”

Barhoum urged the Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank to carry out more resistance activities against Israeli settlers and troops, and “to defend al-Aqsa mosque and Palestinian rights no matter what the sacrifices would be.”

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) – After Israeli forces allowed an ambulance to evacuate the body of Muataz Hijazi, Israeli intelligence agents obstructed it and took the body, Palestinian sources in Jerusalem said Thursday.

They seized the body shortly after the Palestinian Red Crescent Association ambulance left the house.

Meanwhile, clashes broke out in the al-Thuri and Ras al-Amoud neighborhoods between local young Palestinians and Israeli forces. Witnesses say Israeli forces stormed a school in Ras al-Amoud, where they smashed windows in an attempt to detain students.

10. Clashes erupt as Israeli police kill Palestinian suspected of shooting Jewish far-rightist

JERUSALEM Thu Oct 30, 2014 11:38am EDT

(Reuters) - Israeli police on Thursday shot dead a 32-year-old Palestinian man suspected of having tried hours earlier to kill a far-right Jewish activist, leading to fierce clashes in East Jerusalem and fears of a new Palestinian uprising.

The Al-Aqsa compound, or Temple Mount, which is a central cause of the latest violence, was shut down to all visitors as a security precaution. It was the first full closure of the site, venerated by both Jews and Muslims, in 14 years.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Israel's actions as "tantamount to a declaration of war" and his Fatah party called for a "day of rage" on Friday. It was not clear if Al Aqsa would be opened to Muslims on their holy day.

11. Netanyahu's stalling strategy of Jerusalem constructions

October 29, 2014

A laborer works on an apartment building under construction in a Jewish settlement known to Israelis as Har Homa and to Palestinians as Jabal Abu Ghneim in an area of the West Bank that Israel captured in the 1967 war and annexed to the city of Jerusalem, Oct. 28, 2014. This time it was Israel TV Channel 2’s correspondent Amit Segal who provided the latest “scoop” about “new Jerusalem construction plans.” Segal reported Oct. 26 on the outcome of a dramatic meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Economy and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett. This was preceded by a series of reports about an ultimatum that Bennett’s HaBayit HaYehudi Party had presented Netanyahu with: construction in the settlements or demolition of the coalition.

Segal’s report was accompanied by an announcement from the prime minister’s office to diplomatic affairs correspondents regarding his intention to speed up the construction of 1,060 housing units in East Jerusalem, 2,000 in the West Bank and also several infrastructure projects there.

Peace organizations and human rights groups that assiduously monitor developments in East Jerusalem were poised to act. Foreign diplomats were quick to report to their respective capitals about the new spoke in the wheels of the “peace process,” which in any case is in a deep freeze. Spokespeople at the foreign ministries in Washington and Europe took out their standing orders to condemn construction in the settlements, which violates international law and runs counter to the spirit of peace. As expected, the Palestinian Authority was quick to declare the new construction plans as additional, damning evidence against the Israeli government, which keeps deepening its occupation while declaring its desire to end it.

It is no coincidence that the story was leaked, of all people, to Segal, who is well versed in the quagmire of party politics but is perhaps not familiar with planning and construction procedures. There was a reason the prime minister’s office deviated from its usual practice of issuing written statements about Netanyahu’s important decisions, and opted instead for telephone conversations with political correspondents (and not with correspondents who cover settlement issues).
