Sweden recognises state of Palestine

Sweden becomes first country to recognise Palestine while being an EU member, drawing Israeli anger.

Sweden has officially recognized the state of Palestine, Stockholm's foreign minister has said, less than a month after the government announced its intention to make the unprecedented move.

The Palestinians cheered Thursday's move, while Israel summoned Sweden's ambassador to protest and express disappointment.

Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said in a statement that the recognition was "an important step that confirms the Palestinians' right to self-determination".

"We hope that this will show the way for others," she said in remarks published in the Dagens Nyheter daily.

JERUSALEM (AFP) -- Israel recalled its ambassador to Sweden for "consultations" Thursday, hours after Stockholm officially recognized the state of Palestine, the foreign ministry spokesman said.

"This indeed reflects our irritation and annoyance at this unhelpful decision, which does not contribute to a return to (peace) negotiations," Emmanuel Nachshon told AFP.

He said the recall of Ambassador Isaac Bachman was for an unspecified length of time.

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstroem announced her country's recognition of Palestine Thursday, making it the first major European country to do so.
