Yesterday I suddenly remembered a UFO report from the early 60s in which a farmer near where I live reported a metallic sphere that shot over his farm and dropped some fibrous stuff all around.

Here’s the story.

Here’s the letter I wrote yesterday to our local paper:

November 8, 1961

It’s coming up on 52 years ago when spideresque critters from outer space flew over the Chadron area in a metallic sphere and tried to cocoon a farm. They weren’t figuring on Farmer Ted showing up with a lighted ciggy and demonstrating that it couldn’t be done.

Roswell holds a UFO Festival every year, but what does Chadron do to celebrate the anniversary of the day a local area farmer pretty much told a gang of fiber-spewing arachnoid alien thugs to take their web and shove it, thereby thwarting possible silly-but-annoying webby attacks on our town? Chadron does nothing to commemorate that remarkable day in 1961. Absolutely nothing. And it’s a pity, really.

Someone should at least write a song about it.

An annual The Day The Aliens Didn't Get Us celebration here sounds like a winner to me - something along the line of Roswell's annual UFO Festival. Maybe I’ll propose the idea at the next city council meeting. Yayuss!
